Top Speed

 Hey there.

I have just recently purchased an '87 savage. In fact I am 35 years old and this is my first bike period. So, not only am I a newbie to Savages but to any bikes.
My question is, is it possible to buy a different set of belt drive gears to get a little more top end speed out of the bike?

Thanks a lot.

No, there's nothing available for the Savage.

Welcome to the forum, you should focus on air, fuel and exhaust. The serch option has been very useful for me.

Yep, by doing the air/fuel/exhaust mods, my bike will hit 100 easily.  Don't plan on spending much time up in that range though... Cheesy

It's not so much a question of how fast one needs to go, it's a matter of knowing you have unlocked the total potential of the bike, and that you have that reserve there if it should ever be needed.

You mention top end speed....What speed do you expect out of your savage ??  A new rider, a new bike, and top speed ??   You make me have some concerns.... ???

I see where your coming from, but I would have been inclined to ask the same after my first outing on the interstate finding that I could barely do better than 70 at WOT.  As others have said, a few simple changes will make a world of difference.  It's not the gearing, but lack of power that is the problem.  Once you have the power, the larger rear tire would serve the same effect as gears though just very slightly.  Of course your speedo won't reflect this even though you'll be cruising faster.

KLX is geared for just a touch over 100mph at the 7500rpm red line, but to me it's the acceleration that matters not the top speed.

with a sportster muffler, and basic carb mods found on this web site, the wife's '96 will roll 85mph before i shut it down, and there is more left. at that speed, the bike's diminutive size becomes rather appearant.

Fastest I've gone with my Savage is 93mph, the bike had more left in it, just didn't have the nerve to go for the ton mark. Glad I didn't cause at the next light one of Florida's finest pulled up next to me and gave me the  hairy eyeball Shocked. It's nice to have the reserve umph to get up that fast but 65-70mph is where a light bike like the Savage should cruise. There isn't any easy way to change the final drive ratio, it is what it is, tweaking the engine is the way to go.  Grin

Concerns?  Highway speed around here is 75mph, and you'll get run over if you go that speed.  Not everybody buys an inexpensive bike to toodle around the countryside at 55mph.

I just wanted to thank those who replied to my question of top speed. It's been a big help.
To SAMM, who had concerns. I should have been a little clearer. I am new to the whole street bike thing, but used to ride dirt bikes. It was not a question of wanting to open it up all the time, but as someone else said, the speeds that poeple drive on some of our roads is greater than 70 mph.
