"How reliable is SAVAGE?" survey
03/04/06 at 17:34:04
After all the fuss about Savage's reliabbility and quality, I think we should have a survey of all the bike on this board. I don't know how we will conduct this but maybe for starter, we could post YEAR model, current ODOMETER reading, how long you have the BEAST.
If anyone have more suggestions for this survey, then do so. This survey would really give us the real answer to how long our beloved SAVAGE really last?
Since mine is pretty new so here it is:

2005, 2450mi, 1 year

This is a self-selected survey and thus invalid. Thumper is a 2000, 11000 miles, half in the last 15 months that I have had him. I expect many more years of trouble free riding.

I'll abstain since I've only had mine close to a month.
However, mine is a 2002 with 4,700 miles. Dealer told me that when they took it in on trade, the plug had not developed a leak but they were aware of the potential and went ahead and replaced it before reselling it.
In my time of ownership, I've had zero problems other than a bad tube in the rear tire. Got that replaced Wednesday and all is well once again.
Other than that, the only thing I can offer is that this bike has had a 20 year production run. A product that is defective doesn't make it 20 years without the manufacturer either correcting the problem or pulling the plug on its run.

1986 approx 29000 km I have hade to replace a starter drive gear, weld the crankcase, replace the cam chain adjuster, have owned this bike for about 8ish years, also had a oil leak,(not the plug),stripped head bolt, had to put in a heli-coil, of the top that is all I can think of.

1986 Savage with 98,600km.Owned for 3 years
One complete motor rebuild, starter motor replaced, fork seals, clutch cable,
Clutch, needle valve, solenoid, decompression unit and cable, throttle cable, new drive belt and side stand relay.
One of the most reliable bikes I have owned. Never let me down on long rides.
Cheers

ya know fellas(and gals), of all the Savages running out there for the last 20 yrs, I have to wonder what percentage of all of them is represented on this board or all the Savage boards, for that matter. my guess is mabey 2 or 3 percent, if that many. whaddya think, folks? how many Savage riders out there know that a great info source like these boards even exsits? Bill aka diesel. this is a very unique group.

We are unique indeed, and quite a handsome/beautiful bunch as well.
I have a '96 model with just 6000 miles. It was purchased new in '99...it was a long wait in that crate.
My only problem was due to road damage @ 1800 miles...not the bikes fault. It has been problem free otherwise.

1. 1996 - purchased new - now has 8300 miles - only issues have been my own fault. Has oil leak which may or may not be the infamous plug.
2. 1996 - 17,000 when purchased - has 21,000 now - half the issues have been my own fault (maybe 1/3 mine - have to blame the idiot who ran it over for some, and the fact it was sitting outside wasting away for some too). It has been a royal pain in my 'neck' for the last year - I'll be surprised if it starts again (which hopefully will be in the next month if no more of life's surprises get in the way)

2004 7K miles. Purchased with 17 miles on the odometer 9 months of riding (actually switched over to a Concours in November).
Routine maintenance and one episode with the starter switch (in a thread somewhere).
