Well it only took a week or so to get them -
it seems to be just badged by them it's really
a Deka power sports battery made by East Penn
it's a ETX15L AGM CCA 190. Size wise it's an exact
match - does not have a vent pipe and terminal mounts
are much heavier so I had to bend the inside edge
flat so it would bolt down.

Man did the '02 fire right up - it's usually a bugger to start as the battery would lose charge fairly fast - it measures 12.27 volts and new Bigcrank measured 12.99 volts out of the box.  I'm more convinced than ever - that if our batteries are not very hot then our ign system just doesn't work correctly.

Rather handsome

Look at the size of the terminals on that baby. darn, just replaced the battery last fall on my scoot or it would be on top of my wish list Wink.

open circuit voltage.........state of charge
........12.80 or greater............100%
...............12.60.....................75%
...............12.30.....................50%
...............12.00.....................25%
...............11.80......................0%

The actual stabilized OCV can only be determined after
the battery has been disconnected from the charger for
24 hours.

just checked - both of these new batteries this morning are 12.57 volts or ~ 75% charged

Huh?  Lead storage batteries are taught in every beginning chemistry class:  2.2 volts per cell.  Six cells is 13.2 volts.

that's the chart that came with them and it looks like a pretty normal range if you search on - open circuit voltage - ocv - our learned 13v+ seems to be how it acts under charge/discharge not after it sets for 24hrs

Which is more important... Cold crank amps or the Amp hour rating?

Im looking at the YTX14AHL-BS High performance maintenance free because I can get it locally and save the shipping from the US.(extra $20-$50 depending on speed)  But I notice it has a higher CCA of 210 but the amp hour is less than stock at 12 AH.  Any thoughts?

Sorta like width(cca) vs. depth (ah) since you don't normally need a long period of cranking to start a savage i can't see where a 12 vs. 14 would make much difference - if anything the higher cca would be better to supply the  starter, decompress, and picky ign module enough to fire properly.

I'll second the CCA being of greater worth.  The CCA is how hard the battery will crank, the AH is how long it will crank.  I only crank a half second or so.

My logic is that there is a decompression solenoid to allow the engine to crank easy to a reasonable rpm.  But as long as the decompression solenoid is operated you have no compression to fire the engine.  Therefore the engine should fire upon the release of the starter when the engine is spinning by momentum and the compression is there to make it pop.
