Valve Clearance Question (Read 6 times)

Digger Serious Thumper 2005 No Login Offline Ya gotta be tough to ride singles! Posts: 1604 Colorado Springs, CO Gender:	Valve Clearance Question 11/24/05 at 20:48:23 I just did the second valve clearance inspection on my '01. It had 5200 miles on it. All clearances were at 0.005" which is unchanged from the clearances I measured at the 600 mile point. QUESTION: Can I expect the clearances to increase with mileage, or will they decrease? Thanks in advance.

If your valve seats should wear, that will causes the valve to recede, reducing the clearance at the tappet making the clearance too tight. BTW Suzuki recommends clearance checks every 4,000 miles.

Using that, I came up with 6250 miles but when I consulted http://www.onlineconversion.com/ I found it converted to 6213.7119224 miles. Oh well, fairly close anyway.

Like a rule:
If You have a screw and lock nut valve adjustment / like the Savage/ , the valves tend to go loose
If You have shims, the valves tend to go tight.
But there can be exeptions
In my expirience, here in the desert ,the air filter is very important for the valves and for the cam chain. This is more pronounced in the Off-road world, but it is valid in the road bikes too.
If You have a K&N filter, don't forget to oil it !

Okay. It's not the first time I've been accused of that. I saw yours and knew mine was slightly different and couldn't remember where I'd gotten my rule of thumb. That made me wonder just how accurate it might or might not be... so I looked it up. I just happened to wonder if I'd been using a BS rule of thumb for 30+ years and if I should change it.
