Too much oil causes...
11/22/05 at 08:56:29

I don't know, enlighten me please...

Too much spray paint on the oil check window causes me to add too much oil when it is twilight...  So, since I burn about 1/2 quart every two weeks, I'm inclined to leave it in and burn it alll...  presently I'm well above the upepr mark when the bike is warm and vertical...

Too much oil can be as bad as not enough in some cases. If it gets up where the crank can "splash" in it too much it can actually cause it to foam up, and also  can seep into places it does'nt belong.

If you're burning 1/2 to 1 quart every 2 weeks something is very wrong < rings, valve seals etc? >

Too much oil causes excessive crankcase pressure. The increase in oil capacity leads to a decrease in air volume, therefore, more pressure which can lead to problems. The increased pressure can cause your crankcase seals to leak. Combined with a compromised crankcase vent this can cause blow-by which allows  oil and  crankcase gasses to get past your piston rings. A common symptom of this is an oily air filter and oil  puddling in the air-box.
If you are burning (not leaking) 1/2 quart a week you should do a leak down test. How many miles are on your bike?

24k on the bike.  It's been doing this since I got it 3 years ago with 8k miles... will drain some out today... never any puddles of oil below it... not the plug cap leak...  got new engine gaskets... not installed yet...

Thanks guys!

I'm curious about your motor now. About how many miles can you go before you have to add 1/2 quart? I assume there is blue smoke coming from the exhaust, so does it get worse on hard acceleration?

About 200 miles per 1/2 quart, unless it is highway, then is is 100 miles.  Uh, not too sure about the blue smoke, but I am running it rich, but not rich enough to foul the plug.  Since I'm not sure about the smoke, don't know about hard accel.  I don't ever recall seeing any blue smoke at idle, so maybe I do have a leak... but like I said, never any puddles, and the spot where the plug cap leak should be is pretty much "clean" (i.e. no excessive oil).  The bike runs great otherwise.

My pal chuck, who is brave enough to ride behind me, says there is no blue smoke.

Well, if you are not burning the oil and your leak is very minor, this begs the question " where is the oil going?" Did you check your air-box for an oil puddle? Is your crankcase vent tube in it's stock location?

yeah, that's what I've been trying to figure out for a coupla' years...

Airbox: full of electronics...

crankcase vent tube:  goes to a separate filter (see pic).  When it was stock, there was some goop (oil & dirt) in the bottom of the airbox, but nothing excessive.

OK, first thing is I don't like the location of your vent tube with the filter attached. For a test, remove the filter with the tube in its current position and see if  a measurable amount of oil comes out. If it does this is bad. Next closely inspect the filter to see if it has become saturated with oil causing it to restrict air movement.  If it is too oily, this also would be bad.
As a possible fix to your oil consumption, change the position of the vent tube so it is higher than the cylinder head which will allow pressurized oil mist to return to the engine. This is good. If you suspect the filter is restricting air flow (keep in mind air flows both ways in this vent system) run the engine without a filter in the new higher position as a test to see if you oil consumption normalizes.  If the filter is oil damaged replace it with a new free flowing one.

One other point I would like to make. The vent tube should be as big as the original one. The one in your pic looks too narrow.
