I forget who it was, but one of the guys I was talking to a while ago on this forum said that he'd gotten a savage cam reground. Is there any possibility that the wrong cam could make one of the valves hit the piston? I'm assuming that since the compression release holds the exhaust valve open, that one's not an issue. What about the intake valve?

I am the one you talked to about the cam.  When a cam is sent in for the work, you also have to supply some specific  information about the engine so that the machinist knows exactly what needs to be done.  There was no danger of damage.
