Max RPM?
09/19/05 at 21:51:02

I just put a cheap tach on the Savage that was designed for a Harley.  It works fine.  Does anyone know what the maximum RPM is supposed to be?  The top end of the engine gets pretty noisy at higher RPM and the reason I put the tach on was so that I don't exceed what is safe.  Is the max RPM published anywhere?

Thanks,

JIm

I duno if such datas are available somwhere but if you know the torque is 5,1 mkg @ 3000 rpm and power 31 ch @ 5400 rpm you know you should "travel" @ 3000rpm* and change your gear @ 5400 (the power decrease after 5400, so no real need to go higher and I really doubt this bike could reach more rpm in top gear)

*every explosive engine on this earth are beter to cruise at the torque's peak (less consumption and accelerate quickly)

Red line on my KLX is 7500rpm, the same piston speed on a Savage gives 6500rpm.

I would have to agree that 6500 is probably the factory number.  With the performance cam I have in mine, the power curve is still strong up to 7000...which I use as MAX RPM shift point on hard runs.  I have seen close to  8000 on a few rare occasions, though I do not recommend cranking it up that high since the piston speed at that rpm is beyond traditional safe limits.
The racing BSA Goldstars of years gone by did reach 8000 rpm with max power achieved at 7000...but those were blueprinted engines, and the key being that the stroke was only 88mm...6mm less than the Savage...so the piston speed would be less at a given rpm.  There were a couple of SPECIAL Goldstars with "super trick engines" that were able to reach   9,000 RPM, which for a big single in the 1950's was nothing short of MIRACULOUS.

6500 rpm is pretty much the accepted max for the engine. Without rejetting and an opened exhaust the power fades away around 5400 rpm. It's a torquey big single made to pull  Cheesy.

Replacing the main and/or pilot jets to alter the fuel flow.

when an engine is "balanced and blueprinted" in laymen terms the crank is balanced equally on all lobes so that when it turns its weight is evenly distributed along the lenght of the shaft..same goes for cam etc.  basically every tolerance is much tighter less play between moving parts ...ports are cleaner, cylinders are ground to allow better oil dispersion  it just means the engine is refined to a higher standard than original equipment to get optimum performance

I remember Honda's RC 30 the big end clearance was .001" to .004"standard but for race use nothing other than .0025" was used otherwise it would blow.

Nopody's berfect.

The blueprints contain all the dimensions of the parts.  Since noone is perfect, the dimensions are all given with a tolerance.  The piston may be listed as 94mm plus/minus 0.1mm.  This little bit of slop allows cheaper manufacturing, but you lose a tiny amount of performance.

A blueprinted engine is built zero tolerance, or as close as humanly possible.  Each and every part is carefully measured and selected or machined to be right at the specification.

Crazy people blueprint engines.  The time and money involved is insane for the small performance increase.  Being sane is not as much fun.

Ballancing the engine is the other way to free up some horsepower, when the engine is ballanced less power is used to shake the engine so more is there for the rear wheel. I don't know if anybody has had a Savage engine ballanced, it has an internal ballancer which keeps the vibration down. Maybe a lighter weight piston would help increase the max RPMs.

It would not really INCREASE RPM, since piston speed is the limiting factor...not rpm.  However, with a lighter piston it would be able to reach max rpm more quickly.
