Mac Slip on
06/17/05 at 22:14:57

hey i just recieved a mac slip on, i was figuring the end would be the correct size for the header but it seems i need a OEM exhaust gasket and i cant get the one out of the stocker with out destroying it.  i have it temporarily rigged on there right now but can i just buy some exhaust wrap or something to tighten the connection up?

I have read others trying the wrap and it lasting between 2 and 2 1/4 miles before it blew out, but you can order new ones on ron ayers - there are two types I ordered in one of each - both about an inch long - 1 is rather plain and just seems to be exhaust gasket material it fits real tight, I believe this is the oem and once it's in the muffler seems impossible to remove - might could split it and get it out,,, the other seems copper clad and might be reuseable - anyway used them both on the header pipe for the new jardine on the '02 - for sure no leaks!

I installed my MAC slip on yesterday and ran into the same problem as you.  I would recommend you get the Suzuki Muffler connector and fix it properly as I'm eventually going to do.  But in the meantime I have the perfect temporary fix, so perfect that you could probably leave it that way.  I took some 2" wide stainless steel tape and wapped it around the end of the header pipe, up against the flange.  Make sure to wrap it as tight as possible.  I started out with a 2 foot piece so it would be easier to handle and kept adding more tape until the muffler was a snug fit on the pipe.  You can find Stainless steel tape at many auto parts stores and you will need approximately 5 feet of tape to make sure you have enough.  I tried it out today and no leaks!

i found some high heat muffler wrap at car quest for $1.30.  I did the same thing as you and wrapped it around the header until the slip on fit snug and put some WD-40 on it and slid the mac slip on and so far no leaks with about 150 miles on it.  i am going to order one of those connectors so i dont have to worry about it.

hey reelthing, you wouldn't know what part numbers those are on that site.  it is kind of unclear what a exhaust gasket is.  i dont know if this is what i need or if it is for the header going into the cylinder.  thanks

The two different pipe gaskets are
14771-24b01 ($13.14) and
14771-46e00 ($9.05) and if it was me
14181-45c00 ($3.58 - header pipe to engine) it doesn't take moving the pipe much to weaken this gasket- of the two pipe muffler gaskets - I do not remember which was copper clad I think it was the 46e00 but I'm not sure - or get one of each

I definitely recommend the header to cylinder gasket.  I didn't see another one for header-to-muffler but I'll have to look into that now.  I jacked around with a number of potential fixes that all failed until I just got some 1/2" wide aluminum flat bar that was either 1/16" or 3/32" thick.  I cut a piece long enough to fit around the header, bent it to fit and installed the muffler over it using a 1 3/4" U-bolt exhaust clamp.  She doesn't leak now.

Just for clarification, 14771-24b01 and 14771-46e00 are both the muffler connector.  14771-24b01 is for pre-'96 Savages and 14771-46e00 is for '96 to present Savages.  You only need one depending on what year your bike is.  I found out when I stopped at the local dealer to pick up the gasket.
