I was just about to say that myself.  I really like the look of the V-Max.

Ah yes, the good old V-Max. One of the better muscle cruisers to come out of the 1980s. Toyota actually pinched a V-Max feature for the Generation 7 Celica GT-S, the "lift" that comes on over 5K on the tach, as in, that extra kick in the butt from the higher flowing secondary air intake system. There is a shop in Florida that sells a twin turbo kit for the bike as well. AND a supercharger....

The V-Max/Royal Star V4... in essence, 1/2 of a K-code Mustang/Cobra 289 turned sideways...and then miniaturized to suit...

Good bike, the ergonomics aren't great though.

If I did not have the Savage, I'd ride something elce of my stable- Rebel 250 or Bandit 600 with GSXR750 engine for the city and ZX11 or GSX1100G for long rides.

Just as a point of information, Yamaha actually produces many of Toyota's twincam engines today, as they did in the 80s and 90s.  The 1998cc turbocharged engine in my 1991 Toyota MR2 says "Yamaha" right on it.

On topic, I'm not sure what other bike I would ride because the Savage is my first bike and I haven't gotten it out of the driveway yet (just got my permit yesterday).

TBeck2000, what Savage Rob said.  Congrats -- you'll love that bike.   Grin

What would I personally ride?  I'm curious about the Rebel -- it looks like fun, but I don't know how well it would do on the hills near me.  As far as something bigger, though, maybe the 2006 Boulevard M50 in blue, if I thought I could handle the weight.  The M50 looks like the Savage's big, heavily-armed sister.

I have no idea.  And oddly, now that I think about it, I don't have that much interest in anything else.  I'm really happy with mine.   Smiley

Kaishaku, for your purposes, the Volusia might work.  Have you ridden one yet?

That really is a tough question.  The Intruder is probably about as close in general looks to the Savage as anything but it's just not the same.  I do like the bike though.  Today, if I didn't have a Savage, I'd probably opt for either a V-Max or 8-Ball.

I test rode a Victory Vegas a while back (same as the 8-Ball, less chrome and add some black paint) and I really enjoyed that ride.  It has plenty of very smooth power, rides comfortably and handles well for a big bike.  It would be a an excellent choice for long range travel, or just blasting around town.
I was impressed with it.
The 8-Ball starts at about $12k...not bad...

So, what would you ride if the Savage 650 didn't exist?

Or, what bike could be considered the 'big sister' of the Savage?

(I really like the looks of the Volusia 800, and shaft drive would be fantastic)

My other bike is the Intruder VS800.  Nice bike!  I like the shaft drive and the liquid cool.  The bike runs great, sounds great, and makes me very happy.

But for real fun, I still jump on the Savage and hit the twisties.

But then again, like RadarORiley, I'm a short, fat old lady and the Savage fits me just fine.  So does the Intruder.

I was shopping for 2 bikes at the time and this is what I was looking at when I bought the Savage.  The biggest reason that I didn't get this one is due to the seat height which was too high for my newbie spouse.
