After owning three Savages going back to 1988, I made the choice back last Nov. to move up to a bigger bike so the wife & I could travel more comfortably.

I chose a Yamaha V-Star 950T because just like my Savages, I will do all service myself. No radiator/cooling system to service, no shaft drive to service & no spoke wheels to clean & adjust. I just went over 3800 miles today & would make the same choice again.
I've loved my Savages, but this bike is Sooooo SSSwwweeeeeeettt.
This picture was taken at the Texas Mile. We put over 200 miles riding 2-up that day and were ready for more. Cool

All it needs now is a trailer hitch that I'm in the process of fabricating.

I have to admit I am interested in this one.
What is the long term reliability of this?

What memories, when stationed at Ft. Holabird (Md..now gone), I rode down from Boston on my 305 Honda supehawk.  It was Feb, snow on the ground but roads clear...Somewhere around 12 hours in the saddle but she. in Feb after being put in my parent's basement in Sept) started up with one hit of the button and never skipped a beat. The dream's valenced fenders are/were too olde school for my tastes. Shocked

Hmmmm.....

Well, I use my Savage (see my signature) as a "daily rider" - almost exclusively for urban work.

I want an air-cooled single with a fairly conventional layout.

Looking around out there, I guess I would opt for the Suzuki TU250.  I'd have to put up with a danged chain, though (I love the almost no-maintenance belt on my Savage).

bikes I had:
2003 LS650
1974 CB550F
1999 250 Katana

would have if not the Savage:
I find a Buel Blast even though they stopped making them. I like the thumper singles I guess.

My first and current street bike is an 04 Yamaha FZ6 that I bought new and have clocked up over 11k fun filled miles.  But I desire something a bit more sporty.  So I've gone back and forth between a new Triumph Street Triple R or new Triumph Daytona 675.  I've decided to go for the Daytona.

But recently I discovered the Savage/S40 and see it as an economical mod friendly platform that could satisfy my desire to build a very light weight urban bike with cafe racer styling, experiment with mods, or any custom look I might want in the future.    Smiley

What's wrong with shaft drive and liquid cooled motors?

(No, I really want to know!  I'm basing a large part of my research on which bikes are the most durable and lowest maintenance)

If you want low maintenance go air cooled (no water pump or plumbing)
If you want durability go water cooled and shaft drive.
