How have you done?

Wait, the Vulcan 500 has a Ninja 6-speed engine?  Or you'd swap one in?  If so, is it a chore?  I'm intrigued; that'd make quite a little hot rod.

yup! Wink comes like that outta the box, the CDI (rev limiter) and carbs
might be a little different, not sure, but it's the same basic "ninja"
engine; many highway police agencies around the world use them
cause they're pretty fast and that watercooled engine is simply bullet
proof. There are 2 models: EN500 & 500 LTD w/only minor styling
changes between them. Well tuned will do 100+mph.

It would likely be a Yamaha xs650 (as a project bike, cuz that is what my Savage is)  My current daily rider is a 1997 Intruder

I love my Savage, but if I had to chose again I'd pick a little longer frame to stretch my legs out. V-Star 1100, HD Sportster 1200 with the forward controls. Then I'd look for a used single for around town. Maybe the old Vulcan 500?
Had an old 68 Honda 450 that came over on the Mayflower until 1988 - just got tired of not finding parts for it!

Suzuki had a 400 single I don't think any Jap company make even a 400 single beside Suzuki.

It's been awhile, but I thought the neighbor's only had one. Just looked it up and you are correct. Still a nice little commuter though even if t has one too many cylinders...

I seem to keep asking myself questions like this because, even though I really like everything I've heard about the Savage, it seems too small for me to me comfortable on for very long (stock, anyway).

So, what would you ride if the Savage 650 didn't exist?

Or, what bike could be considered the 'big sister' of the Savage?

(I really like the looks of the Volusia 800, and shaft drive would be fantastic)

My dad screwed a deal his brother was making to sell me a blue one in 1969 for 500.00. Dad lived long enough to see one sold at auction for 46,000.00.
Oh, and Mick,
The one I missed looked show room fresh! and had low miles.
