Help needed for exhaust and tires
05/12/05 at 07:22:37

Hi everyone, I have two topics I need information on:

First, I have tapped two holes in the exhaust plate of the stock muffler for my bike.  I like the way it sounds with the holes.  I was wondering, if I completely remove the plate, will it sound decent?  besides being loud Wink Any performance issues with removing the plate?

Second, my Savage is a 1997, and the previous owner didn't ride much at all.  It runs fine, but I believe the tires are the original.  Should I consider replacing them since it's now 2005?

Thanks!

HA HA.  I just did a search on previous posts and saw I had asked the baffle question earlier, oops  Embarrassed

Still wondering about the tire question though.

1997 model year? That means it was made in 96, so the tires are 9 years old. Yeah, to be safe, change the tires. Go to Dunlop or Metzeler if you can justify the price. Cheng Shin is alright if you just want some cheap tires to get you going sooner.

The exhaust will sound "funky" if you delete the end cap. Go ahaed and try it, if you like the sound, look up and follow the jet swap over posted elsewhere in the forum.

Have fun.

I've used Metzeler in the past (750 katana) and liked them, and I'm using Dunlops now (supermoto) when it's on the road, and like them lots.
Pay good money for good tires.

A few more questions:

Should the tubes be replaces as well?
Would a place like dunlop mount and balance tires I purchase?

Thanks again!

Mine is a 98 and I got it last summer.  Within only a few months it was showing a fair amount of cracking in the sidewalls so I decided to replace them.  I used the Dunlop 491 Elite II's and like them very much.  They'll run you a bit under $180 for the set at Motorcycle- Superstore.com with free ground shipping.  Be advised, however, that moving to the 140/90 on the rear could necessitate some changes.  For me (at 200 lbs.) it meant removing the saddlebag supports and setting the shocks to their highest settings.  Since I've now replaced the mounting bolts with hex-head mushroom cap bolts, I might be able to put the saddlebag supports back on but I don't need to at the moment.  Anyway, something to be aware of if you switch from the 80 to the 90 - most folks find the left side rubs the mounting bolts if the saddlebag supports are installed.

Oh, one other thing: going with the oversized rear tire will alter the accuracy of your speedo.

Thanks for the info Rob.

I'm planning on sticking with standard size.

I hated the sound of the stock pipe, and played with it figuring I had nothing to lose.

I yanked the back plate and baffle from the stock muff -- A little better WOT performance, but low-end performance sucked.  Sound was loud but more like a dirt bike, not a cruiser.  I wound up replacing it with an HD muff to get my low-end power and low tone back.  You can have the gutted stock Savage pipe, if you want it.  Send me a zip code and I'll figure out how much it would cost to ship to you.

Thanks for the offer Bob, but I'll stick with the current one.   Smiley

The muffler is just one item on a long modification list that won't be completed until the money is there.

I already have to buy a new battery and tires at the minimum.
Sad

Where are you? My shop mounts bike tires purchased from us for FREE. Balancing is $8 (although if it doesn't need any weights, we sometimes "forget" to write it up).
Change your tubes and rim strips at the same time. Cheap insurance.

That makes a *BIG* difference.  At the rate I'm putting on the miles I'll be getting back to you on this around August '07.

Shops around here mount for free as well, provided you buy the tire from them.  Savagethumper got a heck of a deal from Two-Wheel World here in Arlington on his new Dunlops.

So much for my shop, I'm about 30 minutes south of downtown Seattle.

Tube should be around $9 for a good one, rim saver around $5.

Paladin, you could always ride up for the Ash Run...
