Carb/Muffler Question
05/03/05 at 17:48:21

I have a K&N air filter on the way and I'm considering a Sportster muffler.

My question is, do I have to both rejet the carb and the change the exhaust at the same time or can they be done independently.

I'm still a little queasy about the carb thing...

While you're at it...there's a set of highway pegs for a 96 savage on ebay...can I put those on my 2003 without any complicated modifications?

Hey Blue, I plan on doing the k&n and HD mods as well. My bike came with a 155 main jet and was rich from the factory since the EPA in its Infinite wisdom hadn't cracked down on bikes yet. I anticipate I will have to richen the carb up a little. My jet will be ok just a little tuning elsewhere and it should be all right since my bike is the richest savage from the factory. I don’t recall the year of your bike but I think it is fairly new and if it is it will require more extensive recalibration. It is not a difficult process and I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you run into any problems there is a unbelievable wealth of knowledge on this forum. 8) 8) These bikes rock!!! Shocked

Highway stuff should fine. If they are what I think they are, they just clamp on to the frame downtube with a couple of cheap u-bolts. The frames are the same. You SHOULD do the jet upsize when you do the muffler mod. I haven't done it yet (6 years after changing the exhaust). I need to, boy, do I need to...

changing the jet is the easiest thing to do. trust me.

all you need are the new jet, short handled phillips and flathead screwdrivers.

if i can do it, anyone can do it.

Do you need to remove the carb from the bike for change the main jet (and white spacer removal), OR can it be done with just the gas tank + seat removal?

Whats the procedure? What screws, which side?

Let us know.

The K&N filter I order arrived, the I also got 150, 152.5 and 155 main jets. Not changing the muffler though. Thinking of 152.5 to start.

What do you think?

to change the jet alone, you only remove the float bowl, the botom most part of the carb. nothing else needs to be removed.
to do the white spacer you have to remove the carb. removal of the carb does not require removing either seat or tank.

hey, just think, if it's hard to get on, it likely won't ever fall off.
