How to Add Picture/Links
10/01/04 at 07:35:23
This has come up in several threads recently so I wanted to create a topic to address the question. It is quite easy to add pictures and links to posts. This thread will cover:
How to get your pictures online
How to add a link to a post and also how to name that link
How to add a picture directly into a post
The first step is that the picture needs to be available online somewhere. If your picture is already available online, skip to the next post. If your picture is not yet available online, read on. There are lots of places you can post pictures for free if you do not have your own webpage. One that I have used is
www.bikepics.com
.
Here's how to get your pics online at bike pics:
Go to
www.bikepics.com
.
Sometimes when I go to their site, I get "page cannot be displayed" but if I refresh the page, then I get in. It works...I don't why...
Create an account (its easy and free).
After you create an account, you can easily upload whatever pics you want directly from your computer.

Adding a Link to a Post Here/Naming that Link:
After you have uploaded your pictures to a website such as bikepics (see previous post), you can include it in a post as either a link or an image.
To insert a link
in a post you need the address of the page that the picture is on.
To get this, click on the pic you want and then use the url you see in the address line as the link.
Then start a message on this forum and insert the url into the message.
Next highlight the url and click on the "insert hyperlink" in the section called "Add YABBC tags". It is the second symbol from the left. This will insert the code for a link around the url.
As an example, I've included a link to one of my pics from bikepics below.
Remember if you get "page cannot be displayed", click on the link again:
http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/220498
Naming the link
is easy, it just requires editing the code a little. The best way to understand how to do this is to click on "quote" on this message. You will then be able to see the code in the message. By looking at the code for this link vs. the one above, you will see how to name a link:

To add a pic directly into a post,
you need the address of the actual picture (not just the page the picture is on).
To get this, click on the pic you want. Then right click and select properties. The address (url) you see under properties is the address of the picture.
Highlight the address and copy it (you can use "control c" to copy it or just right click and select copy).
Then start a message on this forum and insert the url into the message.
Next highlight the url and click on the "insert image" in the section called "Add YABBC tags". It is the fourth symbol from the left. This will insert the code for an image around the url.
Here is an example:
If you are struggling with any of this, the best way to understand what is going on, is to click "quote" on one of these posts and you will see the actual code.
If it still doesn't make sense, ask questions. Happy posting.

Glad I was able to help! Here's another tip: if you want to edit a previous post, you can go to that post and click "modify". This will allow you to change a previous post (you can only modify your own posts, of course).

As well, most ISPs offer subscribers a fee "home page". If you create a home page, you can also do as I have....create your own photo albums and post your pictures on your own site and then insert the url using "copy image location" within a posted message on this site.

And who's post did you try to modify to learn that?

Same sort of approach. If you want to use a pic of your own it needs to be posted somewhere on the web. Then go to "Profile", check the box that says "I have my own pic" (toward the bottom of the profile page) and then add in the url (web address) of the pic. The pic must be a gif or a jpg.
You can also use one of the standard forum pics (choose one from the personalized picture list).

Yeah thats what I was doing. Tried 2 different pictures and nothing came up. So I tried putting the pic directly into the post..... no problem. The picture above and another on the same site just will not go into my profile for some reason. I tried a 3rd one today from a different site and it popped right up.

Perhaps they are too big? The typical avatar pic is 100 x 100 pixels and depending on the site 29K or less.

You can also get a free software package called "Easy Thumbnails". Go here....
Easy Thumbnails
This software will automatically reduce your photos or graphics to a thumbnail size....but the picture needs to already have a 1 to 1 aspect ratio. A typical 480 x 640 resolution is a 3 x 4 ratio. So you should crop it first to a 480 x 480 (1 to 1) which prevents distortion. The software will then reduce it to a 100 x 100 pixels. That is how I created mine.

Check out IRFANVIEW and PhotoFiltre.
Both are free
, Free
, FREE
!
www.irfanview.com
www.photofiltre.com
I've just started messing with photofiltre, and it looks promising.
I've been using IRFANVIEW for almost a decade. Every image I have posted here has been massaged with IRFANVIEW. It's a viewer, but can also resize, crop, adjust color, create slide show executables, and about a thousand other things. I can't speak highly enough of IRFANVIEW. I use it at home and use it at work.
