changing oil and oil filter on Ls650
08/02/06 at 19:22:55
I changed the oil and oil filter for the 1st time on a 2002 Ls650 it with only 650 total miles and used a oem oil filter and 10w 40 oil and I put 2.1 quarts in crankcase and now after this oil change for some reason when I engage the clutch handle and attempt to put it in any gear it appears to rake the gears and no other adjustments were made and before i changed this oil and filter the transmission gears had no raking of any kind. I check the owner manual and also a clymer manual made for the ls650 and I can find no place where the transmission uses any oil other than the engine oil, so I'm stunned as to why this has happened. Would it be possible for someone to give me their opinions on my problem pls. Thanks Jerry Heatherly

don't want to discount that something is different - first though - yes the transmission shares the oil with the engine - 10w/40 is what the book calls for. When you replaced the filter are you sure the rubber o-ring was there on the tube the filter slips onto as well as the spring under the cover at the back of the filter? next I'd check the gap at the clutch handle

KLX has two drain plugs and supposedly needs 1.9 litres of oil at a filter change but mine was full to the top of the sight glass with 1.7 litres and hasn't setteled with use.

Be sure the oil has the "MA" certification for use with wet clutches. Most modern auto oils, especially those labelled "energy conserving" have friction modifier additives that are NOT good for clutches and gear shifting action. Usually oils marketed for motorcycle or ATV use have the MA rating.
