Unfortunately, for at least 30 years, healthcare claims to use an "outcomes based" method of evaluating healthcare. For about 8 years, I worked on a floor that did inpatient cancer treatment and general medical research. It was appalling how the drug companies manipulated the way the data was recorded. If the study showed anything bad, they'd basically just rewrite the study parameters to ignore that.

They did several studies on herb supplements, for example. If they couldn't pinpoint the specific chemical in the herbs that made it effective, or if it could not be copied in a lab for some reason, they rewrote the study criteria to show that it was ineffective. They also consistantly ignore doseage levels in herbal preparations. When they studied red yeast rice for cholesterol, they found the microdose of statin, duplicated in the lab, then sued the herb companies fro patent infringement, a priori be d@mned. They claimed the red yeast rice had a wide variance in concentration of the statin, so it was dangerous. They neglected to mention that variation was 1/10th to 1/100th of the dose THEY are selling.

Do any of you take Prilosec? Sure, the studies showed that repeated bathing of the lower esophagus can cause cancer. They prescribe a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibiter) like Prilosec. The PPIs permanently turn off the acid producing cells in your stomach, giving you relief from heartburn. Ever notice the package says not to take it for more than two weeks? That's because the PPIs themselves, by forcing your stomach to produce more acid producing cells, itself increases the risk of stomach cancer. So, you're trying to prevent cancer with something that causes cancer.

The most egredious thing about the studies was how they'd start with thousands of patients in a nationwide study. Every time a patient had a response outside what they wanted, that patient was dropped from the study. If they start with several thousand participants, they'll have enough "Goldilocks" patients to make the figures look plausible.

Outcomes based research is just  the phrase they're using to attempt to legitimize their BS. If they really depended on outcomes, healthcare would offer money-back guarantees.

WOW Something that makes sense !!!!!

Question, Why do gun hating doctors ask if you have a gun, and if it is yes, then it goes on and on and on,
why you should NOT have a gun.

YET, they do NOT ask if you have taken, heroin, LSD, GHB, cannabis, molly, ecstasy, methaqualone, peyote, (magic mushrooms) to name a few, or go over the list of class 5 drugs.

OR ask, YOU HAVE A KNIFE ????????
cane, walking stick, club, etc, etc, etc ... !

It's not a standard.  MnSpring could be repeating something he heard about the "do you ever feel like hurting yourself or others" question found in many triage procedures or intakes.

If a facility was asking about personal gun ownership regularly there would be people all over the place complaining about it.  The NRA would be reporting on it etc.

As we all know by now, almost everything is a gun control issue to some.

"...could be repeating something he heard ..."

NOP !
    It WAS ASKED !!!!!!!
Some years ago, before I went in for a one day Surgery !!!!!

"... If a facility was asking about personal gun ownership regularly there would be people all over the place complaining about it..."

And YEP !!!!!

Their WAS a LOT of complaining.
Then the AMA decided to STOP telling Doctors/Nursers to ask.

(Yet if they are Anti-Gun, they STILL ASK)

I have access to the AMA entire database.  There is no record of the AMA ever requesting, or reversing a request or guidance that intake procedures ask patients if they own guns, and to provide statements to discourage gun ownership.

You might have experienced it, and you might have heard there WAS a LOT of complaining, but the likelihood you were present for a LOT of complaining is near zero.

Official AMA procedure does encourage physicians to ask at-risk patients about firearm access during routine visits and to counsel them on injury prevention and safe storage.

If physicians were telling people they should not own guns there would be substantial coverage, not unlike the FL 2011 gun gag law attempt.

Or course the AMA would NEVER 'delete' something from their flies.

Question: "What color is the rug on the floor"
    Answer:  "I Plead The Fifth"

Why is my doctor asking if I own guns? Why are doctors asking about guns?

(It is rarer today, than yesterday.
           YET SOME
Anti-Gun Doctors/nursers still ask)

At the doctor's office, we're accustomed to answering all sorts of personal inquiries and sharing information that we might not tell anyone else. But one question that many physicians in the United States are asking is causing controversy: Do you have guns in your home?

Our guest Chethan Sathya, MD, director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention at Northwell Health, joins to discuss the critical issue of gun safety and how hospitals can use a strategic framework that includes community engagement, research, policy development, clinical integration, and medical education.

Dr. Sathya emphasizes the importance of screening patients for gun violence risk and how the AMA is advocating for firearm violence prevention to create impactful change.

Unless you’re an apt mental gymnast, you may entirely miss the logical fallacies and the appeal to authority that this “public health expert” purports to be fact. That’s because people in institutional positions of authority have the opportunity to abuse their positions to exploit political goals. No institution is immune. And, apparently, medical health isn’t either.

Do no harm. That’s the first rule of medicine. Yet, recently, a physician’s role has seemingly expanded to knowing whether or not a patient owns a gun. If you’ve been to a doctor lately, they may have asked you whether or not you own a gun or if there is a gun in the home.
Both questions, outside of severe mental health examinations, have little to no bearing on your physical health.

That hasn’t stopped anti-gun institutional establishments from trying to drive a wedge between physicians and their gun-owning patients.

Dr. Alice Kuo, who works in a primary-care practice in Santa Monica, California, says she's been routinely asking families for years if they have firearms around.

The National Rifle Association, for example, complained in a recent blog post that physicians who want to know about firearms are pushing an anti-gun political agenda. "Doctors do not receive firearm safety training in medical school, and advising patients about the many nuances of gun ownership is far outside their field of expertise,"

(Wonder how many people, have told their doctor, "you should not drive that un-safe car")

Yes, there is a movement, often supported by Second Amendment advocacy groups, to restrict or prohibit doctors from asking about gun ownership. These efforts often focus on protecting patient privacy and preventing discrimination.

(Just 5 min gathering info,
a LOT MORE is available !!!)

So, I think they might think you're nuts and a danger to others or yourself
There's probably a reason for that because it's never happened to me
I had my first hospital stay during Covid and several since, never was asked if I own guns
Most often asked if I drink enough water (I don't)
Very different line of questioning Huh

They do all the time.  I still have the data.  Much like how people can delete posts here, but we can still access the archives.

Why is my doctor asking if I own guns? Why are doctors asking about guns?

The majority of gun harm are self-inflicted, thus the AMA considers it a health issue.  Your own sources answer this question.

Bottom line is there is no guidance for physicians to try to get patients to get rid of guns.  That won't stop some from doing it, but it is not a nationwide common practice nor has it been.
