I'd call it "breaking the law. Private gun transactions have to take responsibility for background checks in at least 15 states to make the sale legal. My state is one of them. States and local jurisdictions have always been able to override the clueless interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Most towns in the old West required you to check your sixguns with the sheriff or marshal until you left town. ALL states have at least some additional gun regulation for hunting. Some hae very strict criteria for claiming self defense.

Any way you look at it, the transaction you described is a shady deal and breaks some laws.
