Allison Guerriero, the security researcher whose tip to federal authorities exposed Charles McGonigal, the former head of the FBI's New York counterintelligence division, as a secret paid operative for sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, was found dead at her Boynton Beach, Florida home on August 27, 2026. Authorities are awaiting a medical examiner's report. No cause of death has been confirmed. Her brother-in-law told the New York Sun she was "happy and healthy" and "living her best life." Hours before her death she had posted a series of messages on X criticizing the FBI, Jim Jordan, and McGonigal. The presiding judge at McGonigal's sentencing credited Guerriero with "extraordinary contributions" to US counterespionage.
McGonigal pleaded guilty in 2023 to secretly working for Deripaska, a close Putin associate, while simultaneously overseeing FBI investigations into the same man. He received a combined sentence of 78 months across two cases. Guerriero had alerted investigators after noticing McGonigal carrying large amounts of cash and maintaining unusual relationships with foreign-connected individuals. Her information helped prosecutors establish the full scope of the violations.
