2008 -- repairing a cracked turn signal
03/09/26 at 11:11:18

Hello All,

Anyone successfully repaired/glued back together a broken turn signal housing?
I've tried to use the 'Barge Cement,' but it turned out like using a chewing gum.  Sad
Would SuperGlue work? Or possibly JB-Weld?

Prices for a new one seem a bit excessive ($95-140), and I haven't seen any used one. It's the Front Right, BTW

Thanks

I use JBweld for almost everything, but I've found that plastics are difficult to glue, and often impossible. I personally think superglue gives the best results here. If it's glued in place properly, I'd see if I can add some reinforcement.

Over the years I have had two of the turn signal lenses break loose from the reflector.  Fortunately, I was able to retrieve the lenses and glue them back on to the reflectors using Devcon 2-Ton clear epoxy.  The repairs have held up for many years.

Also, JB Weld makes a product specifically for plastics.  You can get it at WalMart and most auto parts stores.  That product might be more suitable, and I agree that reinforcement is in order.  Fiberglass or nylon filter screen would probably work fine.  If you apply the reinforcement on the inside of the housing it should look OK.  You will have to remove all of that "Barge Cement" before you do the epoxy repair.  What is "Barge Cement"?

Warning:  The JB Weld epoxy for plastic is incredibly stinky!  It can smell up the entire garage - don't try using it inside your house!!!!!

Hello, and thanks for your replies!

I did use SuperGlue (Gorilla brand), and it seems to hold, somewhat.
I thought of getting some strong, clear-plastic tapes to strenghten it (like some shipping tape that you cannot rip), but I'll check the JBweld for plastics for sure.

My forks are in a shop to replace the seals right now.
(I recently got rid of my 1986 Savage and got this 2008 Boulevard -- it has straight handlebars that I don't like [and it seems like quite a hassle to replace them]; it's a 5-speed, but the top gear is the same ratio as the the old one's fourth. No sissy bar, but an addtl Allen needed to remove the seat, and a few other things. But it came with a windshield -- I'll get some pics later))

BTW, Barge Cement is good to reattach soles to your old tennis shoes, etc. It stays flexible; just not for auto/moto repairs
