If I read that article right it looked to me like the oil was protecting parts from friction Better than new oil, making Changing oil actually cause more wear than running the oil longer. Did I get that right?

Sorta kinda -- if the additive packages are still good, so is the oil.

If not, then not.

Our Savages actually dance to silicate contamination build up (fine dust) which builds up over a year period to the "too much" levels.

Point, it costs more to test our oil than it would cost to simply buy 2 replacement quarts and an oil filter.

I theorize that an older Savage that consumes over a quart of oil in a summer may be a candidate for continuing on a bit longer, as the new oil that is continually added refreshes the additive packages and thins out the dust contamination.

Especially if it has fine air filtration (greased / oiled media) and magnetic separation of ferrous wear particles in the oil filter cavity .......

Is there a common air filter that would qualify as
Fine Particulate control?

I was changing oil when a good run, hour or two, would drop the oil enough to kinda scare me..
