NEW RECORD= 232 MILES BEFORE RESERVE!!!!
06/15/16 at 11:58:50

First I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Smoking blue for the effort put into finding that this gas tank will fit.
I put a V Star 650 tank on my bike, holds 4.5 gallons. Filled it up and went riding. 232.29 miles before I hit reserve!!! It took 3.85 gallons to fill-up at 239.40. That's about 60 mpg, which is good for mid 50's riding on flat state roads. But I got about 3.7 gals on main!
Now I am packing a Camelback and hitting the road for July!!!

Yes it IS a FAT TANK! Your knees point out then your legs come back in to the pegs. And I got rid of the stock speedo, with a big-g-g rear tire (150/90 15) and both Kaw pulleys it was off by 21% anyway. Now I am using a $20 android phone for a GPS speedo and it has time, max speed, compass direction, battery level, and THREE TRIP METERS! a, b, and c.
The led's on top where I can see them are, from left to right= Left T.S., Neutral,  High Beam, and Right T.S..
Bottom has = Driving light switch and indicator light, indicator light and switch for the USB charger for the phone. I don't want to have the charger powered when starting or shutting down in case of a voltage surge.
I had to build a new seat from scratch, and am trying a firm closed cell foam kneeling pad ($6 at Home Depot) 7/8" thick and 4" springs under the base mounted over the shock bolts. It seems OK for now but is still a work in progress.
Now I have 2 weeks to finish the seat, and pick the mangos, and I will be on the road for all of July!

Well that is a "long set of legs"!  I can only go 160 miles before I hit reserve with my GT550 tank.

I wonder how far you could go if the speedo hole were welded up and made into more room for fuel? Huh

(I never have been fond of taking my eyes off the road and tilting my head down so I can see the tank mounted speedo).

I'm thinking of making the cover open up with a hinge. Would be just right for my phone and wallet.

You certainly conquered the range restrictions!  Nice job, did you have to do many modifications to get that tank it to fit?

I saw an old picture here from someone that used the hole as a drink holder  Wink

I had to make new mounts in the front - the tank is 2''-3'' wider inside on both sides. Could fit a slide-in storage box, good for wrenches or a bike pump maybe.
Tank is about 3'' longer than stock, so had to extend the rear mount.
You could chop off the front of the stock seat and make it work, but mine is solo only and I have always liked the look of a sprung seat. They just look right on a thumper.

Any interference with the bars while turning?

No the bars are fine, the windshield just touches at full lock. Only a bother moving it around, never go full lock while riding.

I have to back my bike into a tight spot in the garage and usually have to turn it to full lock. If you turn the bars that far while riding, you're definitely going down!  Smiley

Got the seat done and am hoping it rides the long ride, I'll be gone on it the whole month of July. Put a better clear coat on the tank, and made the lid open-up for a small glove box. Made a sticker to adorn the lid - 40'' T. For 40 inch Thumper, I'll see how many people ask about what that is?

Rodger, a I had that windshield but wanted it bigger,,,, sooo I saved the hardware and bought a $10 piece of plastic at Lowes, heated & bent it over a mold to get the curve trimmed it and installed with the old hardware, AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED! (so far, about 5k)
The seat is hinged off the back mount of the gas tank and 4'' springs mounted on little angle iron brackets over the shock bolts.
Made a cover for all the wiring under the seat from the same piece naugahyde as the seat cover and a little ""bra'' to extend the windshield down behind the headlight.
I'm actually sitting back about 3-4'' compared to stock so it seems like the pegs are extended.
Hoping everything stays together for a whole month on the road, but only one way to find out!
