I am interested in Opinions

In the newbie intro message, Serowbot says, "Get a Raptor pet, and a Versy adjuster... and you'll own the best bike available in the last 30 years.."

I'd love to hear why people here think of the LS650 as the best bike?

Well, I'll start things off with a contrary opinion. I like my S40 just fine, but, "best bike available in the last 30 years". Not even close.

What competition is out there?  Vstar 650, 750 shadow (not really applicable), vlx 600 (not made any more).  Am I missing any models?

I can honestly say this about my s40.  I've had it for 8 years, it has never broke down and left me on the side of the road and always started every single time (except a dead battery and e10 in the carb).  If I can learn how to fix it, anyone can.  I never had any experience or tools.  8 years later I still have a great bike and I know how to make it run even better.   Smiley

I bought mine after test riding an old goldwing. Thought I should start smaller. Saw this at local dealer and liked the looks. Knew nothing about it. So far it's been a gas. I am new to riding. Found out yesterday that I need more experience before trying the Chicago expressways again. I do like the way it rides and find it has enough power. I hope to get several years service.

I'm a daily commuter, rain or shine (mostly shine Smiley, and have put over 16,000 miles on my S-40 since I got it new 14 months ago. Despite a self-inflicted battery failure I have no complaints. I am very pleased with the cost of ownerhip including gas, maintenance and such. I doubt I will ever trade it in, my goal is to hit 100,000 miles with it still going strong.

While Suzuki's LS650 may not be the "best" motorcycle available, most on these Forums currently own one or have owned one (I've personally owned 2 over the years) during their history as a Rider ... and so are endeared with Suzuki's 650cc Thumper.

I'll always love 'em ... they have many positive virtues ... and are unique ... none other like 'em offered by the other of the Big-4 Japanese manufacturers!

Best? Best is a relative term ... if some owners deem them the "best" for them, then it is ...

An inexpensive, easy to maintain, cheap to make dependable (in 95% of the cases sorry WD) big single that isn't enduro/dual sport. This bike has tons of torque and is fun to ride, as long as you don't want to ride on the interstates all day long it's AWSOME! There may not be a lot of aftermarket bolt on parts available for the LS650, but who needs them if you have some tools and some imagination you can do what ever you want to just about any bike  Cool

Best? Not even close, the best bike of the last 30 years was the VN800A, closely followed by the VN800 Drifter and the VN1500 series. More power, better build quality. The C50 and C90 are decent too.

AS SHIPPED, the Savage/S40 is a disaster waiting to happen. Timing chain tensioner, lean jetting, very cheaply made lightweight electrical parts that are not water resistant, guaranteed to fail petcock, guaranteed to fail clutch and kickstand safety switches, dry cables, garbage brake shoes/pads... With some minimal cash outlay and a few replacement parts worked out by the forum itself, they become fun backroads bikes and can be turned into serious motorcycles. Just depends on your budget.

I do own 2 of them. I like them, but I don't trust them as far as my permanent 35# lifting limit would allow me to throw them. If I need to go more than 300 miles in a day, I'm taking something else.

Perry, I agree, and posted this question to see what people had to say about the bike. It's interesting to hear what draws us together.

A 2000 LS650 has a KBB value of $1,535
2000 Yamaha XVS650 V Star 650 Custom $2,165, that's 40% over.
2000 Honda VT600C Shadow VLX $2,050, that's 34% over.
2000 Kawasaki VN800-A6 Vulcan 800 $2,255, 47% over.

At least with the Kow you're getting more than just an extra cylinder.

For what it does... best bang for the buck.
