Microsoft produced up to 20,000 Surface Mini tablets before abruptly scrapping the launch this past weekhttp://liliputing.com/2014/05/report-microsoft-produced-20000-surface-mini-ta...This is a large embarrassment for MS, yes indeedy, but it was done to avoid an even larger embarrassment and even larger scrap costs of yet another completely failed product launch done after selling through the product into the distribution channels.
It is also noted in the article that MS Office cannot now be quoted as "being able to run" on the Surface Mini as has been stated many times before in ads, etc. since the format is too small to support the touchable icon bars, etc that would be required in the small real estate tablets.
Office must be totally reworked before it can go on any smaller framed tablets than 10". Lots of MS workers apparently knew this, but no one was rocking any boats as the big boys in mgmt steamed the ship over towards the edge of the falls .....
Will MS sell the 20,000 units when the software is finally right? Sure, MS makes a point of Ebaying lots & lots of their out of date stuff at big big discounts now a days ....
===========================
Here are the harsh facts in MS's world right now.
By the time MS can stumble through designing and making something, anything,
the chipset is a year or more out of date and the competition has lapped them performance-wise twice over by the point has come to do the new product introduction.
To keep most of the egg off their face MS will design it, build it and scrap it (in that order).
