Adjusting rear shocks

Is it necessary to remove the rear shocks to stiffen them up? I can get to position three on the bike, then the 6mm threaded rod I'm using starts to bend. I'd like to try position 5 and back off to suit.

I used a phillips screwdriver on mine.  It went all the way with no trouble.  No bends.

Would soaking the shocks in WD40 or a light machine oil for a few hours be recommended? Have had this problem in the past.
