what the heck is on my tank?

I purchased a kawasaki vn750 tank to mod to my savage, basically similar dimensions but nearly another gallon. And it comes with a fuel gauge. But looking at the tank there is a line coming off the back where the seat will but up to it. What the heck is that? It looks like it had a gas or vacume line attached to it. I plan on cutting it off and welding it closed but am I gonna get in trouble doing that?
Anybody tell me what that line is?

It's probably a vent line.If you look right where your gas cap goes into the tank,is there a little hole there? If so that line goes up to there. If so it's an unvented gas cap.So your overflow doesn't hit the engine.

run some water thru it to see where it comes out.
as said most likely a vent line to some epa device.

So does anyone see any problems just closing it off if it is a vent line?

Yep,no vent, nonvented gas cap.Nowhere for vapors to escape,BOOM.Or if you're lucky the rubber seals in the petcock will fail, and just leak.

BOOM
, don't like that so much. I believe I'll rethink this a little.
maybe that little vent lines not so bad after all, maybe I can turn it down sooner and run it somewhere to the ground? or maybe into a charcoal canister?

O.K.
Here is a pic of the rear of the tank and the line coming off of it, On close examination I think I can circumvent Kawasaki's venting system and turn a non vented gas cap into a vented one. But if I don't have fitment conflicts I'll just leave it alone. Could I just run a line down the frame and leave it open or maybe cap it off with a small aquarium charcoal filter?

I would just run a line to the bottom of the bike, and call it done. It's just a vent. Our carbs just vent behind the battery box,and the cap just vents out.
