Title: Oil Drain Plug Problems
Post by easymoney on 04/21/24 at 07:57:20

I was ready for new-to-me 2013 first oil change.  Plug won't come out. WD and wait. WD and wait. Won't come out. Hammer tap-tap WD and wait. Nope Regular length 1/2" breaker bar and strong effort and it turns! ...and turns and turns etc. Impact and stripped threads?

Take it somewhere to drill and tap? ...or what?

Are you sure you are working on the drain plug - and that you are turning it the proper direction?

The chances of it being corroded into place and WD40 helping are not likely.  There are 2 quarts of motor oil behind the threads keeping the threads well lubed.

It sounds like it could be stripped - that would really be unfortunate.  Too many people overtighten the drain plug - it only needs to be snug enough to keep oil from seeping past the sealing washer.  There are a lot of threads on that drain plug......it is long and able to withstand a lot of abuse from being overtightened

If it is stripped - that is very unfortunate.  It is likely the only way to fix it  once you get the old plug out is to find an overside/self threading repair drain plug.

Pretty sure it is the drain plug. 14mm wrench size head on a bolt with built in flange a little aft of the kickstand that looks like most of the drain bolts I have seen. And unless this is the third LH thread fastener on the bike I am turning it in the right direction.  I used WD 40 just in the chance the flange of the bolt was somehow galled to the face of the case, or the gasket was corroded between them if there is a gasket in there.
So, if I could get the bolt out I am aware of some options. Options for getting it out... not so much.

Thanks for the reply.

RED FACE! RED FACE!
I don't know rather to be more embarrassed or more relieved. I was twisting on a motor mount bolt.
When I was doing it the thought occurred that several times the inaccessibility  of the plug was mentioned and the one I found was no prob.
Thanks every body. Now I will crawl back into my hole and try this again next weekend.

This is why God invented beer,

Drink the beer AFTER the oil change, not BEFORE!  LOL.   ;D
