I had somebody tell me there is a weather man on a Huntsville station that is my twin , but I'd hate to think I LIE as much as a Weather man ?   :)

#4 Ruttly

Looks the same , sounds the same , mannerism the same !!!!

I think OldFellers smile is a little longer ?  But Tec-Talk is the same.  ;D
.................

I was watching the 1862 pocket Revolver when he popped up.

It seems some folks are blessed with more twins than others  ??

Put him on an assist walker or in a wheel chair and he could sorta kinda look somewhat like me.

He is a cheerful little chipmunk, ain't he?

I thought he was a really nice feller !   Fully of spunk and all grin !

Sorry to think of ya with a walker ... but I hope to live long to enough to have one of them too !   ;)

Hay , do you remember that year I tried to plan a ride to God's Acre ?    Well Marcia and I went but we took the van.

It's in South Carolina not to far from the Norther Border .   I'd kinda like to go back and drink some more of that Blessed Water (just for a " booster shot ")    Its also is called " The Healing Spring "  I think ? .

https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?465558-use-005-quot-wide-saw-blade-to-do-the-six-petal-HST-cut-on-jacketed-and-cast-bullets

I am still active in the gun world, the above thread is my current ride over on CastBoolits at Gunloads.com.

HST cut bullets (cast or jacketed) open up wide off a six petal cut system with a small expansion cone at the tip to get the expansion rolling.  Most of you guys understand Federal HST type expansion, so we can leave that with the thread to explain what is going on.

Even crip old farts can still have fun, you know.

At 2,700 fps speeds no petal cut plain lead slug is going to do perfectly

I was thinking 2200 fps was the max for lead GC bullets , for wheel weights anyway ?

In my .357 20" barrel I ran some 125gr round w/flat slugs up to the 2200 speed and they seem "Really Hot" .
Maybe ...
I should take the coping saw to a few of them to see how they act on a water milk jugs ?  :-?

Whats the "cone" to put in the leading end ?

For jacked bullets I use a simple HSS 45o countersink to put in the opening bevel.   There isn't a lot of bevel area needed as the shock of the tip hitting the soft target jacks the soft lead open fairly easily.

Once expansion starts, it is self-maintaining until the cut flutes are fully opened and bent over the bullet body.

That makes me think of a "Tip" I made for my bullet seating die that pushes the bullet into the case by putting the pressure on the bottom of the HP and opening the sides of the HP a little extra also.

It looks like this little jewel if lined up with the cut slots would open/start the opening process just fine !   ;)

But

Can you imagine the field day a Democratic Prosecuting Attorney  would have with a bullet like that ?   ::) :-? ::) :-[ :-X

I'd think it would stop a deer size varmint in it's tracks "Right Nicely" !  :)

Next, I shoot powder coated lead slugs that have no top end speeds ......

I'm beginning to think who is the EVIL TWIN ?

But

If the current political situation turns into a SHOOTING WAR , then I hope your on my side !   ;)

I milled some of these sort of cuts into a powder coated 185 grain cast lead bullet, but it was too much time and trouble to do very many of them.

The HST cuts are a lot quicker to do and you can fixture the assembled cartridge to make it even easier to do.

Buying expensive premade bullets is not what we do at Castboolits.com.

Hay OldFeller

Long time ago I was casting some 115gr Lee SWC's and was dropping them in some burn motor oil to quench them ... and they turned black with the color imbedded into the bullets , they also were real really HARD !
Their cutting edges were "Hard and Sharp" , I'm thinking they were some of the best bullets I've ever dropped out of a mold !
But
I've shot them all up long ago and have been unable the get the process to repeat its-self.

Has any of the Cast Bullet group ever shared a similar story and know how to do it on command ?

Oil is used to quench carbon steel, we use tap water to drop our cast bullets into if we want them full hard.

Of late, with powder coating nobody bothers with water dropping bullets as they can be shot soft at full speed because of the plastic jacket you put on them by powder coating them.

Shooting bullet lube grease into lube grooves is pretty much passe nowadays ......

Shooting bullet lube grease into lube grooves is pretty much passe nowadays ......

I went to Lee-Alox long time ago and haven't tried anything else.

Years ago I was shooting Pistol (Contender) "Iron Turkey" and ran through a lot of projectiles , I got tired of reloading and started sticking to the "Small-Bore" wing of things.
But
I have a nice supply of reloads ready for the Zombie's when they get here , already fixed up and ready to go !   ;D

I've found that Ballard Rifling (.357 Rifle) works with my reloads .   But the micro grove barrels (all the others) and lead bullet lube doin't like each other very well.
So
How does the plastic and Micro Grove get along ?

Title: Re: OldFeller , has a twin !

Micro groove likes post powder coat sizing at an extra thousandth or two larger than your old lubed lead.   This is the same fit that actually makes microgroove work with bare lead bullets, so this isn't new to cast bullet folks.

Actually, if the bullet will chamber after powder coating lots of the new crowd just shoot them as cast and as powder coated, trusting the taper leading into the rifling to size the bullet to perfection as you fire it.

My 8x56 Steyr rifles operate just fine using this "size it as you shoot it" trick as the throats are just plain huge in those WWI vintage mud eating design guns.   Results would vary on more modern guns so I size those according to current LEE cast sized standards.

A thou and a half oversized on a powder coated bullet is the result, generally.

Thanks .

If we never go to war , then maybe I won't need to reload more ?

I don't know how to powder coat !

You ever want to do something like this :
