Title: Yet another project??
Post by TheSneeze on 07/16/22 at 13:40:07

Tomorrow I am heading to Washington state to visit my brother.  Okay, I'm really going up there to pick up a '52 Studebaker pickup that just happens to be 45 minute south of his house!  This is definitely an emotional purchase, as this was the model of my first vehicle at 18 years old.  The body is in very good shape for it's age, but it has been molested already with a small block Chevy and 4wd conversion.  It is an unknown chassis with a Studebaker body on it.  This one will take it's place last in the project line.

If you want to get it back to stock, you could google Studebaker Drivers Club.

Absolutely not.  I am thinking pro street.  Depends on the driveline condition.  If the trans, transfer case, and rear end are good, maybe lifted with 34's and a crate motor.  Probably a crate motor either way, actually!

Well, darn shame it's not the whole Studebaker, but the body is enough to get excited about. You load it up with the right engine and all and you'll be happy. If I could get my hands on it, it would be an Emotional transaction for me too. Never had one, never sat in one, but I just love old iron, and Studebakers are cool.

I always liked that Studebaker pickup body. Even better than the same vintage Chevys. It's those lovely rounded cab roofs and rear fenders.

That Stude is gonna look great on ya.

Well, a 1300 mile round trip and $650 in diesel fuel and I got it home.  Thank God I put a 12,000 lb winch on my trailer as the right rear wheel was locked up.  I will need to disassemble the brake drum and break it loose so it will roll off my trailer.  Still in a bit of shock as this all came down in less than five days.  But the wife was on board with getting it, and we had had great time along the way.  I have lots of ideas for it, but this one is going to the end of the project line.  Get it off the trailer and park it next to the shop.

Stude has a great look slammed or as a stump jumper. It’s all about shapes & lines !

Very cool find! There was a guy in my high school back in the 1980’s that had one, the only one I’ve ever seen outside of a car show. I’d enjoy seeing you post that build here in the cafe once you get to it!

Post by LANCER on 07/24/22 at 03:43:25

I really like the early 50’s pickups.  I had a 51’ Ford pickup at one time in 72’ but foolishly let it go.  It had a flat head v-8 engine and was running at the time.  I paid $150 for it back then.  [ch128533]
Oh well.

Some fancy yard art for now ! Road race car chassis and gently add cab and bed , nice n low , scuff & a satin clear coat to preserve the existing patina. Yup another grocery getter , but this one might get the eggs home !

I found a pic of my grandfather's dealership back in Crystal Lake, IL.  I am going to have the logo painted on the doors matching the patina.

Towed home chassis donor #2, and today I got rid of chassis donor #1.  Two Dakotas in my shop are one too many.  The relationship with the red '04 didn't work out, so I went out and got a side chick (blue/green '94).  Deconstruction to begin later this winter.  Tracker needs to be running before I start the truck project.

I was just going back through this thread and saw

Well, a 1300 mile round trip and $650 in diesel fuel and I got it home.

Dude, that is Fitty Cents a Mile. Sheesh.
You probably don't cruise the drag in that much.

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by TheSneeze on 10/01/22 at 21:34:49

True, but this Studebaker was a total emotional buy.  Cost wasn't much of a factor, as it is a trip down memory lane.  I have always been into two wheels as they were more affordable.  Never got into V8 vehicles or hot rods.  Now I get to build the hot rod I always wanted my first vehicle to be.  I just assembled this today, since I am going to be doing two body swaps in the near future.  Meet the new edition to my shop - Mr. Crane.  Gantry Crane.  I'll have mine lifted, not dropped....

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/01/22 at 21:44:00

That was not any kinda criticism about the old Studebaker. Just a recognition of the costs of stuff today. I'm happy about you getting it. I hope you hang onto everything you don't use. Someone might need those things.

Even though this is an newer Studebaker truck than my '52 ('58 Scotsman model), it is a good example of the stance I am shooting for.  Mine will have bigger meats under it, especially in the rear.

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by Ruttly on 10/05/22 at 13:15:01

I’m thinking a full race road chassis with that cab & bed. Maybe a coyote motor , auto , a/c of course , same stance just a tad lower , something for a daily driver , coast to coast without thinking about.

No shortage of work in the Busted Knuckle Garage!  I see two out of three vehicles without an engine.  That is a problem.  At least there is a finished long block hanging from the engine hoist!  I got it at IKEA - some assembly required...

The Dakota just happens to have the exact same wheel base as a '52 Studebaker truck - 112".  They are cheap to find, and the Stude is not on it's original frame.  So it is a perfect candidate for a body swap resto-mod. It will be riding on modern(ish) suspension, power rack & pinion steering, disc brakes, and 400+ horsepower.

Most of my stuff in there is on wheels.  The shelving units, my weld table, the gantry crane, engine hoist, etc.  It makes it easy to reconfigure as needed when the projects have to get shuffled.  I had aspirations to build a bigger shop when we bought this property until I found out what the construction costs were.  Had to reel in my expectations a bit and went with 25' x 40' - 1000 sq ft.  I had also planned on a deep sink and a toilet, but that would have added $10k to the build costs!  :o  I determined I can run back and forth to the house quite a few times for $10,000!

The Dakota chassis is finally going to the blaster today.  Once it returns it will get a coat of rust inhibitor like POR15 or the like.  I found some less expensive stuff called Chassis Saver that I am looking into.

And yes, this is still hanging around waiting for me to build the motor.  Sitting next to my $40 parts bike that I still haven't torn down.

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by Ruttly on 02/07/23 at 09:31:21

Does that $40 gem have any paper work ? Cause like you always hunting the next project.

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by TheSneeze on 02/07/23 at 13:37:12

No title, no bill of sale, no paperwork.  Not sure the frame is straight as it has been in a wreck.  Front rim, forks, handle bars all bent.  Every turn signal and mirror broken.  I am keeping the motor and anything that is straight and clean.  The rest is going to the dump.  I will have to cut the frame up and salt it into the weekly trash pick up.  Nevada does not like vehicles without a title.  It is already verified that it is not in the Stolen Vehicle Registry.  Been out of the CA DMV since the 90's.

I put a cover on it for the winter.  Eventually it will get a satin clear coat.  Working on the guts right now in preparation of getting the drivetrain.  The Baja is getting the priority though, as I have a 3 day trip in Death Valley at the end of this month.  Still need to break in the new motor before I go.

Fine old truck, man. I've got the disease something awful. IDK why but I get shook up over the old dually flatbeds, like they used hauling hay. Twelve or fifteen foot bed, Wut Da Hayull would I do with That? Dunno, but they jack my pulse..

I have the new four link rear suspension on the way.  Since it's too cold to paint the rust prohibitor paint on the chassis, I may as well get some of the welding done.

Torching and welding is good work in the middle of winter at the port on a cold night. That’s a great winter project you have fun with that. I’m kinda waitin on fork seals for the BSA , then it will be a roller and up on the Lyft she goes. I need another H/F lift. Buildem 2 at a time !

Have you considered heating the paint and metal?

Title: Re: Yet another project??
Post by TheSneeze on 03/19/23 at 08:45:10

The instructions for the paint say it must be over 50 degrees F to cure, and it take 24 hours to fully cure.  I can't heat my shop overnight - only have a wood burning stove.  It's been below freezing almost every night.  Since Spring is right around the corner, I have decided to wait for warmer temps.

You don't need to heat the shop, just the area the painted object is in.
Make yourself a heated insulated box.
Depending on how small it is, couple light bulbs could be enough.

With the dimensions of 38"w x 196"l, I doubt a couple of light bulbs would do the trick.  Besides, I am not going to build a box big enough to house a truck chassis.  I always lean toward the easy way (I'm retired!), so waiting for warmer weather is my easy solution.

nice shop
1" sheet Styrofoam will do wonders
about $10 for a 4x8' sheet
that and some tape
but mite take a heater to do that much space

I feel your pain!

I have been fighting the same issue for coating a trailer floor with bedliner - the finish can't drop below 50 for 24 hours after coating.  The temperature needs to be warm if you ever want the epoxy to cure.  The fumes also need you to have good ventilation.....and they want you to work indoors so that the bedliner does not receive any direct sunlight or get debris blown onto the surface as it stays sticky for a very long time.  The bedliner takes 2 coats with 4 hours between - so it had to be a day that stayed warm all day.

I finally had a Sunday with temperatures in the middle 60's and little wind.  I was able to get it done and it looks good.  My shop is heated with an outdoor boiler so I could keep it warm once the application was done - but my garage was really toxic smelling with the doors closed. I couldn't stand to go into my garage or work in the trailer for days after the finish was applied. The finish takes a week to fully cure and I would open the doors/windows periodically to let the place air out.....thankfully my garage is 100 feet away from the house and not attached - or that smell would have been in the house.

Spring is coming......you will get a good weather day soon!

My shop is 50' away from the house, so no issues there.  Sunday and Monday will be our first 70 degree days in 6 months, but the over night temps are still in the 40's.  Maybe I should be working on the tracker motor.  Oh wait, I need to paint that, too.  Crap!

Lookey what followed me home the other day!  Chevy LS goodness for the Studefrankenbaker project.  It's a 5.3L LM7 out of a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup, with 118k miles.  Some rebuilding will be done - complete valve job, a new lumpy stick, different oil pan.  I'm going to be bouncing between the tracker and the truck this winter!

I only have a two car garage for a shop. Real freakin hot in summer & a few months it’s too cold. A small 10’ x 6’ area off the side with 3 windows houses my compressor & a just under 8’ work bench with vise & a bench grinder. It most definitely is not a shop , a hobby space at best ! But no pain no gain I suffer thru bad to get to the good.

Coil over or air ride ? Fully boxed frame too , you been busy. Usually weight of frame doubles when boxed & gusseted. Ridgidity adds the ability for incredible handling , but doesn’t do much for the ride. Lookin good , continue.

Title: Re: Yet another project??

Going coil over.  Not a fan of bags.  One thing has led to another, and I have to switch from triangulated to parallel four link.  More parts are on the way.  I fabbed a fuel tank mount today.  About 80% there.
