Title: Will this fit between my forks?
Post by paulmarshall on 11/12/14 at 22:33:40

Hello I have the opportunity to lace a 16 x 3.50 on the front hub but not sure if it will fit. I think the rim on its own would but not sure with a tire fitted. Is it possible to fit a tire that doesn't over hang the rim?

I don't recall seeing a tire that wasn't wider than the rim. It'd not only look weird otherwise, but then, why. The rims JOB is to secure and control the tire. Why would I want more handle than tool?
Keep unsprung weight as low as possible.

If I remember correctly. One my one purple bike with the apes,I put a 110 front tire on and it was close.
I don't think you can go much wider.
That's why Harley had a bunch of different forks.Narrow, mid, and wide glide forks.

I like the look of a fat front tire sometimes. They also aren't as touchy as a skinny tire.Like going over open grate bridges.
But mine will still have suspension.

Eventually I would like to go this route with my Harley.

I dont think it would work. Just with a fatter tire on a 2.15 wide rim on the front it was a real pain to get the tire on.  Any fatter and you would have to disassemble the forks just to get the tire past the brake caliper and fender mounts.

Also, it drives like a tractor with a wide front tire.  Instead of turning like a motorcycle, you have to force it to turn and it gets tiresome on the arms and is not very fun to corner.  It also makes the front end prone to shaking and unstability.

Demin our stock tree has about 150mm gap between the shocks which you reckon fits a 110 tire.

So if I fit this triple from a Yamaha Virago which does fit in our frame and supports a 38mm fork and has a width of 165 gap between the forks, should help?

I suppose that installing a wider triple tree will help.  It will require a longer axle, longer spacers, and then you are going to have to work on getting the disc and caliper spaced correctly.

It can be done with a bit of work...I went the other way and mounted a narrower yoke on my Cafe bike.

I have studied your build closely and have gotten a lot of inspiration from it.
I think the extra 15mm should help.
Yes I will have to make spacers for the brake calipers and axle and longer axle but not too difficult I think.

I e-mailed Ryan at Ryca about putting a Heidenau K36 on the front, which has a section width of 4.6" (The Firestone Deluxe 400-18 are 4.25") He said they would fit. If it helps, the front forks are 5.25" wide at the narrowest point (the top of the lower fork tube). The distance between the fender bolt faces are 4.875" (7/8ths of an inch). That would be the gate to pass through. If your tire is wider than that, you won't get it on without deflating it, squeezing it past and reinflating...still not knowing if it would still clear after that point.

Thanks Jeff I really appreciate the feedback. I think the smallest tire I can run on a 3.50 rim is a 110/70.

What kind of bike are you going for?  I thought it was a cafe style?

A fat front tire is going to make it plow through corners and handle like garbage.  If you just going for a trailer queen then its no issue, but if you actually want it to handle it is.

Just seems like that was glazed over.

This tire was a pain to get in there, it barely fit.  Its a 110/80-18.  And the handling is definitely not nearly as good as the stock wheel/tire.  It handles more like a flat track bike now.  You lean it over and you can feel the front walking away on you.

I am going for a Cafe style. I don't believe there are any set rules when it comes to building a custom Cafe Racer. :)
Im only going from a stock 100 to a 110. If anything it will handle better with a 17" as apposed to a 19" inch stock. Not to mention that it will have a side wall of 70 as apposed  to the stock 90.

And if it doesn't handle as well I wont notice as I ride like a old woman. I don't do tricks and stunts and drive to the speed limit. ;)

I bet I drive like an older woman than you do! ;D
