Title: 4-way flasher question
Post by Craig on 08/25/25 at 04:45:13

I tried to use my 4-way flashers to discover they didn’t flash. I turned the bike’s key on and the 4-ways began to work properly. Key off again and no flashers. Is this normal to have to have the key on for emergency flashers? If not, where do I begin to troubleshoot. Thanks.

Normal - nothing is wrong.

Thank you. And thank you for the quick response!  :)

I noticed that the ignition switch on my S40 has another position, past ignition on, which was a little confusing.  I haven't seen more than 2 key positions in decades.  The extra position seemed to leave the rear lights on, but I didn't really explore fully.  Is this the function of the 3rd position, to facilitate emergency flashers without battery killing headlight or ignition circuits drawing power?

The third position is for those places that require you to have a tail light when you park on the street at night.

The third position only energizes the tail light - nothing else.

Leaving your switch in the third position will kill your battery eventually - many new Savage owners have mistakenly turned their Savage off by turning the key the wrong direction, and ended up with a dead battery!

NOTE:  The 4 way flasher was installed on 2004 and later bikes - it is not on earlier models.

Thanks for responding.  My S40 is a 2005 machine.

I went back and checked the behavior with the ignition key in the 3rd - "Park" position.   It does power the turn signals and/or the hazard circuit as well as turning the taillight and license plate lamp on, so those are available as well.

I can see from the wiring schematic that this is the intended factory setup.  I traced the circuits in the attached diagram.

Interesting. I've had my 2004 since 2013 and I didn't know that. Just went out and checked, and yup, you're right.

Of course I've always been very careful about turning the key the correct way before I took they key out of the switch, after learning about the dead battery part of the equation when I'd had my bike for just a couple of weeks. :-[
