Title: Interesting/informative oil video
Post by Dave on 07/13/16 at 06:08:48

I learned something in this video.

Not sure that it applies to my bikes...I use conventional oil (Rotella T 15W-40)and change it more often than needed.  It could apply to my cars as I change that oil at 5,000 mile intervals (I don't do much City driving).  It could be applicable to folks who park their bikes/cars outside in cold weather, and need the car to start on those cold/frosty mornings.

The video shows the effects that "dirty" oil has on viscosity...but doesn't go into the effects that change could have on engine wear.

Maybe that's why you have to add oil when it starts getting old and dirty. Seems like someone said that he knew to change his oil when his savage began "eating" it, or something like that. I think I've had to start adding oil before 2k miles.

Maybe it's breaking down in the air-cooled thumper and losing the qualities that keep it thick at high temps. It turns to water and gets burned up.

I've been considering using Rotella Synthetic. One more reason.
