Title: Not riding too much lately
Post by springman on 07/08/16 at 19:05:14

I was listening to the radio today at around 2 or 3 p.m. They said the temperature was 98 degree f, but feels like 111 degree f. It has been like this the past few weeks. I do miss spring and fall and even winter. :)

I ride when it's single digit temps. I ride when it's triple digit temps. Lately, though, I haven't been riding much either.  :(

I forgot you first name already.
Just remembered your name is David.....

I understand why you are not riding as often as you used to.

When we first moved to Texas I never thought I would ride again because of the heat and the extreme wind, but there is no fool like an old fool.

Wasn't long before I was riding again and I have learned to get out early and be home by lunch time to avoid the worst of the heat. Yesterday I rode about 25 miles west and on the return trip the wind was so uncomfortable I though again about giving up riding.

I decided that I am going to have to watch the weather reports closer and avoid riding when the wind is above 10 to 15 MPH.

After listening to the warnings about about old people staying indoors during the high ozone days I am thinking that I am going get riding early enough to return home by 11:00.

Just think what would happen with a break down on a rural road on 100 degree day.

Believe me Kenny, the bike rarely goes more than 7 days or so without being ridden at least a bit. I was actually going to ride to work on Thursday but then it turned our I had to give me son a ride to work, so car it was.

About the coldest weather I have ridden in is around 30 F (maybe a few degrees colder). The bike did not want to run that morning. Even after about 5 minutes of riding the bike did not want to idle on its own. I only did that once. From about 40 to about 90 F I consider good riding weather.

I heard you ripped a seam and lost a substantial amount of polyester stuffing recently. When you got repaired, are you Sure they used polyester? If they used wool, that might account for the sudden, all over itching.

Cow tipping has always been a intellectually challenging activity for Texans.  (At least, I hope that it is cow "tipping" JOG is referring to.....)   ;)

I was referring to sacred cows, and my willingness to butcher them. I never did the cow tipping thing.I'm sure I would have had I lived closer to ranches in the teen years.. I probably would have driven to where they were had I just known about it when I was a teenager.

I rode to work this morning, so I'll be riding back home this evening.

Traffic was pretty bad this morning and so I had to cut through downtown.  Going through downtown you ride at 20-30 mph. While riding there I heard what to me sounded like a chain dragging on the ground. My hearing is not the best and the motorcycle seems to be running just fine. I have a verslavy. Based on my poor hearing I am thinking may it is a headlight rattle. Any comments or suggestions. G or PG rated only please. :D

Title: Re: Not riding too much lately
Post by verslagen1 on 07/12/16 at 09:31:51

If it's a loose part, putting your hand on it will stop the rattle.
headlight, speedo, mirrors, pulley cover are typical.
but any bolted on part can and will rattle.

on the lower parts, use your foot.   ;)

I recently bought an evaporative cooler.  It is not an ac unit so to speak; although, it helps a lot.  They also call them swamp coolers.

Best regards,

Mine are OLD, and can't find anything like them online, but they have a strap, a hose with valve and a brass button with a tiny hole. Unzip the end, open, unscrew the end, fill, pump it up with the pump rod,, sixteen ounces of Coool.. Green, cylindrical with black strap..

Evaporative Cooler (A.K.A. swamp coolers) I have two on the house.  More energy efficient than  "refrigerated air" (air conditioning).  Most effective in areas of low humidity and temperatures of mid 90s or bellow.

Re riding.... Be on the road before 7AM and be done no later than 11, or risk heat exhaustion, STAY HYDRATED .   8-)

I went to Post Office today....   Saw a picture of JoG2. Something about a  reward being offered for apprehension and charged with "chicken rustling".

Post by springman on 07/12/16 at 12:46:51

I don't have a mister but sounds like a good idea.

A couple of weeks ago I was supposed to meet my wife and son for lunch somewhere about 12 miles from the house and I figured I would ride there even though it was in the upper 90's. Well I went to looking for my mesh jacket and could not find it. Then I remembered I had put it in the washer the night before. Yep, it was wet, but not dripping, so I put it on. The first ten minutes or so of my ride were great. Once the jacket got dry, it was very hot.

It'll be 7 or 8 p.m. before I leave tonight so not overly concerned about the heat. 8-)

Post by Dave on 07/12/16 at 13:36:10

A couple of summers ago it was horribly hot and a full sun.  I had to measure some streets - so that meant walking out on the asphalt.  There is a Lowe's next to one of the streets - so I stopped in and bought one of those little towels that you wet and "snap" to activate and keep you cool.

Well it may work in Arizona where the humidity is low - but in this area of 90+ temperatures and 90% humidity....all that the dang towel did was make me very, very wet!  It didn't do anything to cool me down.

if takes a breeze to make them work and if it's humid, forgetaboutit.

California Central Valley 85-90 the norm, hot is 105 give or take another 5.
I have an old Harley t shirt that says
"If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the valley"
Riding in 110 heat is like taking a nap in a pizza oven.

Naaaaa, you guys are wimps!  ;D

It was down to 94 yesterday with humidity in the 90% range. I wear a pretty thick jacket and gloves and FF helmet. I rode for 77 miles and didn't break a sweat. Ya gotta get used to it.

Title: Re: Not riding too much lately
Post by Dave on 07/13/16 at 05:55:08

Not sure I could ever get used to it.....I tend to sweat a lot when it gets really hot.

I believe in ATGATT, and I really should find a mesh jacket that can offer protection.  My jackets are all suitable for cooler weather and have zip in liners......I need to find something that is really made for hot weather riding and has good airflow.

I ride in 100+, not saying it's comfy, but I ain't dying
Leather unvented jacket, no liner
the mesh jacket is hotter, above 95 and at speed
above 95 wind chill works in reverse, and evaporative cooling isn't efficient enough to keep up, especially in high humidity (swamp fan don't work in Houston)

I used to not have a hot weather jacket, but after being "encouraged" by this forum I finally got one and wear protection (get your mind out of the gutter) in terms of a jacket all of the time now. I must admit I do wear a polo style helmet for most of my around town riding because I can hear and see traffic better, but not opposed to my FF if I think the situation warrants it.

I have this jacket for warm weather riding at the recommendation of someone here last year. Has "fair" protection in back, shoulders, elbows and good mesh venting. Better than just a t-shirt!

Title: Re: Not riding too much lately
Post by Gus on 07/13/16 at 08:40:44

I like protection. I wear a jacket regardless of temps.( but we rarely see it in the 90's here).
What happens here is youll need a jacket and liner in the morning and take the liner out in the afternoon and it's still hotter than hades.
The faster you get the wind rolling thru the better off you are tho. Not much city riding here so you can get out there in the wind and stay there.

If it weren't for a leather jacket, I'd have been torn to shreds. The pants haven't been as much of an issue. I just wear jeans. I wear logger boots too. The biggest drawback is that tall heel may make your joints vulnerable. I wonder if that sprained knee doesn't have something to do with it.

Title: Re: Not riding too much lately
Post by springman on 07/13/16 at 11:08:12

My jacket is all mesh except for the pockets. The heat retention comes from the pads at elbows, shoulders and back. But I very rarely ride without it on. It is not a whole bunch of protection but it is better than riding in just a shirt. I got it very cheap from Jafrum.

I only wear the leather jacket when it gets cold. And the colder it get the more protected I am because the number of layers under the jacket increases. Yeah, I bought the leather jacket about one size too big to make room for the layers. I also got the textile insulated riding pants from Jafrum. They offer protection from the cold as well as from the fall. I just need warmer gloves.

Just now figured out the rattle as I was coming back from lunch. The headlight is rattling. It took me a while to figure out cause I kept reaching with my left hand and pressing against the glass or the left side of the bucket and the noise continued. Well I finally reached over to the right side of the bucket and the noise stopped, let go and it started again. I'll try to take care of it tonight if I get home early enough. It must be an intermittent rattle though, cause I can't hear it when I am on the highway. ;)

Duct tape,,,

Title: Re: Not riding too much lately
Post by springman on 07/13/16 at 20:40:44

I'd rather do something other than duct tape. But if that is what it takes, so be it.

Oh yeah, on my way to lunch I found it is easy to lock up the rear wheel. I goosed it to make the light and then the traffic came to an abrupt stop. I grabbed a handful of front brake and I guess just a bit too much rear brake. No big deal though, reminded me of when I was a young kid and would purposely lock up the rear tire on my bicycle. As long as you do not get hurt it is actually fun/interesting to  :)experience new things on the bike.

If you take the lens off, you can put a bit of duct tape, electrical tape or foam tape on the tabs where the chrome rings hooks....then bolt it back up like normal. That cured my headlight rattle, and is not visible.

Ohh, I agree, completely, Gotta get it stopped. I was just thinking you could wrap it up and stop it till you can get into it and fix it right, but tape will leave an impossible to remove mess without wrecking the finish on the bucket.

If someone else has better pictures by all means share.  What I did was carefully roll the tape along the edges and do my best to get it where things might rub, but not so far out on the bulb where it is unsightly. I temporarily put the ring on and off too so I could tell if I was lining it up in the right spot. I also put some tape around the metal screw prong thingies to eliminate that metal to metal contact too.  Once you open the can up you'll make sense of it.

Now what I don't know is how long it is going to be before the bulb gets hot and melts the electrical tape I put on the outside of the bulb housing and makes a mess, so consider that before putting tape on the bulb versus just inside the ring and bucket.
