Title: Baaad Dyna !
Post by mpescatori on 06/20/16 at 03:58:55

I am sooo dissappointed ...  :-[

Last Easter I bought a Harley Dyna, a 1995 vintage 80cu.in Superglide Sport.
On the 2nd hand HD market, a highly sought fot but expensive bike; €9500 = $11,000 !

The problems started the very day I got the bike, and they continue to this day.

Faulty ignition, bad carb, poor seals in the intake manifold region, squishy brakes and spongy suspension...
...comparing her to my much heavier and bulkier BMW Cruiser makes me insane.

Poor chassis design, poor sitting position, the Dyna clanks and rattles like she was assembled with bailing wire instead of being bolted together.

Oh, I forgot... the tacho underreads ... Lord knows about the speedo...

The only two things that work on this bike are the chain lock and the new Dunlop tires I had installed  :P

€2000 repairs later, it won't come a surprise I have parked her in the garage and am now back happily riding the Savage to work...

THE SAVAGE WORKS !!!  8-)

The Harley is up for sale. If that is HD quality I'm sticking with BMW heavy Cruisers.

A sad experience, however, how long does a manufacturer consider the economic life of their product? I make a guess with automotive stuff, it's about fifteen years max. The Japanese dump their vehicles after about seven. Sure there are millions of older vehicles still serving, from well to poorly. The manufacturers warranty usually runs out after five years and if you get ten years after that you are doing ok. Then all the niggly stupid problems start. Look at the issues people have with fifteen to thirty year old Savages.

Harley does some things Good.

Several of us have Sportsters .   My first one was a 1200 (2004).  Harley messed up when they put the 1200 pistons in a unit designed for the 883.   I didn't know that till I got a 883.  ;)

I've got 23,000 miles on my 883 and have yet to find the first flaw .

Had the mechanic work on it for, says he, "a full week".

Test ride, "rides like cr4p, misfires and feels like it's running on only one random cylinder at a time"

New plugs and leads, no improvement...

New coil, no improvement...

New ignition module, no improvement...

New crank/cam position sensor (the one in the nose cone) no improvement...

Tries a new carb (could be the carb body is cracked and sucks in extra air) no improvement...

The guys is scratching his head until it bleeds...

Test ride after test ride, no improvement, bike runs almost dry, so he puts 5 euro's worth of gas (close to one gallon) of new fuel in the tank...

:o TADAAA !!! BAD FUEL...

I  think I would rather he put my carb and stuff back on.
Just throwing parts and someone else's money at something isn't being a mechanic. And IF the carb was cracked and affecting it, then spraying a mist of water on it would make it run different. His head should bleed...and if he handed me that bill, it just might.
