Title: What are the chrome engine covers made of?
Post by spdfrek on 08/24/14 at 17:55:06

I swear I did try to search but couldn't find an answer. What are the chrome engine covers made of? At first I thought they were aluminum and tested that with a magnet. There is a very slight pull and if it was aluminum there shouldn't be. The reason I ask is I want to cut and weld in a plate on the left one that is cut out for the decomp cable. I am switching to a manual decomp switch and figured I could just slot the cover and be done.

They very likely are made of pot metal.  I doubt if you can weld on it.....but you can try.

Definitely pot metal.  Dremeled mine for the easy access/removal sparkplug mod.  ;)

They are probably zinc die cast.

They are an exceedingly low quality pot metal that outgasses for decades and makes the chrome bubble off. Grind the sparkplug side clean and paint it, throw the other one in the trash where it belongs. Engine looks much better as a "reverse Panhead" than it ever will wearing both tins, especially if they are still chromed.

Took mine off a couple of years ago. Slowly ratting my '02. The bike is not as Suzuki made it anymore.

Maybe I will just leave them off. I wanted to keep a bit more chrome but doesn't look like my idea is going to work if I can't get it welded.

You might be able to braze pot metal.......not sure.

You can braze it, but silver solder is just as strong and does less damage to the base material.

I've ditched mine cause I also think they suck to look at but have found that a lot more snot gets accumulated in the spark plug cave now. Honestly don't know what suzuki were thinking with that bit of the bike. I'm kinda thinking of chasing down a left side one now (stupido threw the old one in the bin).

They're made of hatred, serve no purpose, I threw these freaking things away long ago.
