Title: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/04/13 at 15:38:33

I lost my only ignition key to my 2005. The local locksmiths want 185.00 to make a key.  I found a 2001 set, ignition, keys and gas cap for 50.00. Are the 2001 and 2005 set ups interchangeable?  Thanks!

Wow!  What a ripoff.

I just had a key made for my new to me car.  Took them the lock cylinder.  Cost $28.50.

If I remember, the lock cyl isn't all that hard to get out of the gas cap.  Assuming you have it off. If not, how you gonna get it off for the new cap to go on?

Take the switch off and get down to the lock cylinder.  Just take them that.  It shouldn't be all that expensive.

Yeah, I called two locksmiths and if they come to me it's 190.00-225.00, if I take the bike or ignition and cap to them it's 85.00-125.00.  I need to take both since the gas cap and ignition use the same key but they need both to configure the key for some reason. So I can't get the gas cap off without the key to take it to them, so I'm stuck with them having to come to my house it looks like. So I found the complete set, ignition, cap and keys on eBay. I just need to know if the wiring for the ignition wiring harness pigtail is the same for both the 2001 and 2005.  They've got you when you don't have your ride.

The other option I'd go for is doing a rewire and put in a hidden ignition bypass toggle switch that would run the starter, lights and stuff if someone has done something like that. I did that on an old truck I had when the ignition went out.   I'm not an electrical guy so I don't want to try to wire something like that up without someone drawing me a picture.  :-/

I think they're the same for all years

at least an '88 swapped with an '02 with no problem.

Thanks!  I figured even if the plugin was different it's only 4 wires and I could make something up.  Much appreciated.

You can always hotwire...
4 wires...  1 is hot, 1 goes to everything except the tailight,... 1 goes to the tailight... (I forget the 4 wire... ground?)...

Anywhooo.... connect the tail and the everything, and put a switch to the hot, and gut the tumblers in the gas-cap, and go commando...
Probably more theft-proof than stock... (I've thought about it myself,.. 'cause I hate carrying keys)...

You only had ONE key & didnt realize the need to get a copy?

Ill bet you never step on that sand trap rake again,,

Yeah... one key but I didn't think I'd lose it THAT fast before I could get a copy... UGH!

So, seriously... I'm totally up with doing a hidden toggle. Can someone sketch out a diagram of which wires got to a switch and which one to leave grounded?

Doesn't suzukin do like car manufactures and the vin code tell them the tumbler set that was on the bike? or did they dump older than 10 year bikes?
Just askin' cause I don't know.
I'd call the nearest dealership.....

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/05/13 at 07:02:29

I asked about that and both locksmiths said they couldn't do it off a VIN for a Savage.  I'm going to try the dealer today, but I have a feeling it ain't gonna be cheap even if they can do it.  Fishing around google a couple people said there is a "key number" that you get with the bike and without that they can't make a key. I know it's like that for a lot of cars and trucks.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by old_rider on 12/05/13 at 07:08:36

Dealer should be able to give you the tumbler numbers...its then just a matter of getting a key blank and then taking that to a lock smith.
They are going to do the same thing... unless they like taking apart electronic stuff (the switch) and can guarantee they won't mess it up.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/05/13 at 07:13:23

I'll let everyone know what I find out from the dealer. I'm sure I won't be the last person who loses a key.  But then again... no one else has ever posted anything about losing a key.... Hm.  :P

Look closely at your cylinder, some have a number stamped on them and some can make a key from that number.

The dealers here in the Denver area have told me they cannot make a key from the vin #. They all refer you to one locksmith who does motorcycle keys. My '04 came without the steering lock key, when I went to the motorcycle locksmith he said he could make one, if I bring the
bike to him for something like $100, I bought a disc lock instead.
That doesn't solve your problem though, maybe if you shopped around for a better price having a key made would be the best solution.

Call a junk yard.. get a used iggy & keyS. PLease note Key is PLural.,

A toggle to turn on the power & a button to spin the starter.
I used a switch from the face of a CD player. Now, you know that thing was tiny. Almost NO current carrying capacity, Theres a wire on the decomp controller that fires off its timer , pulls the decomp solenoid & spins the starter. It will do just that even with the key in your pocket, or, wherever it may be hiding. I left it on a strip of circuit board & wrapped it in a coupla rubber glove fingers & tie wrapped it under the frame , under the right thigh. You push that button when its in gear & it WILL walk right off the stand, That bypasses every safety, So, with a good enough toggle & that, you can run it, Wont have "accessory" position,, but hey, thats only good for runnin a battery down anyway,, who needs it. ehh?

Theres an "always hot" red wire very close by, just a single red wire, under the seat. The wire on the decomp controller is ( IIRC) on the front & second from left, I wanna say theres a yellow stripe, bu8t its been years, so,, ehh,, IDK,, look at a diagram,,  be sure,

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/05/13 at 13:32:44

Justin, it seems there would be a simpler wire-up that would just toggle all the system up and still be able to use the starter button on the grips. An auto buddy of mine said you can find a 4 wire ignition for old cars at AutoZone for under 10 bucks and probably wire something like that in. Sounds like there are options if someone isn't into "factory original".  I'm kinda in "commando mode" right now and whacking stuff off the bike anyway.  :D

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/05/13 at 15:02:00

I checked on the back of the ignition switch and no numbers. There were 4 digits on the pigtail and 6 digits on a tag on the wiring under the seat but the dealer said those weren't valid key codes. So I'm back to either finding a junk yard part or wiring in a by-pass switch of some kind.

Yep, there are two brown wires, a gray wire, an orange and a red with a white stripe that is a heavier wire, probably the hot. I'm thinking snip all those and wire them to another hidden switch and leave the dead ignition switch as a dummy/decoy.

So it seems like I'd just wire all the brown, gray and orange together on one side of a switch and the red to the hot side, then plug the pigtail back into the harness.  I don't need "parking lights"/accessory mode, just everything that needs to be on when I'm riding to be on and that should do it.  Yes?

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by verslagen1 on 12/05/13 at 15:13:53

if they are there, they're on the bottom of the ig switch housing (chrome part) as it is mounted.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?

Definitely nothing on the ignition housing, inside or out. Bummer.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/05/13 at 20:01:00

I found buried in the 24th page of google search, a comment by someone about toggle switching a Suzuki GS550.  I googled the GS550 wiring diagram and the ignition switch schematic is exactly the same as the LS650. Yay so far.  The guy said put the red and orange together and the gray and brown together  (which matches up the ignition switch configuration for the ON position in the Clymer manual). The "PARK" position is red and brown together on the ignition switch configuration. SO... if I were to wire a toggle would I put the red and orange on one side of the switch and the gray and two brown wires on the other side?  Any takers?

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by Steve H on 12/05/13 at 20:18:33

If that is the case, you'll need a double pole switch so that it can switch the red and orange together on one pole and the gray and brown together on the other pole.  The switch will have 4 wire connections on it.  2 on each side.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by Dave on 12/06/13 at 05:54:48

Here is the link to the wiring diagrams in the Tech Section.

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1294779818

This shows that in the RUN position of the ignition switch....the red wire is connected to the orange wire.....and the grey wire is connected to the brown wire.  You would therefore need a toggle switch with 4 connections and 2 seperate circuits built in.  Or you could have 2 switches and one would turn on the ignition circuit and the other would turn on the light circuit.

Here's the wiring diagram for the bike http://www.wiringdiagrams21.com/2008/07/03/honda-xl250-wiring-diagram/

I'm surprised by how expensive your key quotes have been.  When I bought my bike, I got it without keys.  I pulled the ignition switch and tank, brought them to a locksmith, and got new keyS (yes, I got spares too) cut in an afternoon, all for the paltry sum of like $25.  And this was in North Jersey, so it's not like I was in some cheap, backwoods neighborhood either!  ;)

I was pretty surprised at the quotes I got, but both places pretty much said the same thing about the key configs and process etc. and they were within 20-30.00 of each other. The dealer quoted me 15.00 with a key code, but no key code anywhere on the switch. I'm also tempted to go "redneck" and just drill out the lock and make it a screwdriver ignition. I'm not in panic mode to decide what to do because we're down to 50 degrees and I have the chain tensioner and starter limiter out and waiting on gaskets and a Raptor fuel thingy to arrive. I might check Bob's junkyard for an ignition set. They've done me pretty good so far on parts.

No black strip. I even removed the plastic piece from the back and looked inside the guts. I guess the figured no one smart enough to own a Savage would be dumb enough to only have one key.  ;D

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by verslagen1 on 12/06/13 at 17:16:13

there must of been a concern with some bikes that some one was getting keys made and they took the codes off.

if anyone currently has a key with a code on it, they should record that number just in case.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/06/13 at 17:25:19

OHOHOHOH!! There is a black strip but nothing under it. (Don't know how I missed it before...) But I looked at the black strip with a magnifying glass and it has some numbers embossed on it!  They are almost flattened out and I'm not sure I can read them, they're pretty worn off. I'll try some CSI stuff like maybe dust it with some graphite or cornstarch to see if I can get the impressions to stand out a little bit clearer.  :)

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/06/13 at 17:33:50

BINGO! A pencil flat across the face, a high power desk lamp, big magnifying glass and I got some numbers!  I'll call the dealer tomorrow with the numbers and see if they match a key code.  This is a letter and 4 digits, the locksmith said it would be a six digit number... we'll see.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by verslagen1 on 12/06/13 at 17:54:56

should be a letter and 5 digits, 6 all together.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/06/13 at 18:09:48

darn. I'm missing one digit. Back to CSI mode. I can see there was something there now. It's just really worn down. For 15 bucks it might be worth a good guess if I can get ANY decent part of that last digit to show up.

If thats a flat spot that you can press onto a flat spot, maybe taping paper to glass & dressing the plastic piece with some ink from a marker pen, then pressing gently onto the paper would give it you, bakkerds..
Just be gentle, no need to be mashing the evidence.

Ive got some of those lenses with a headband, like jewelers wear. Comes with a drop down loupe, for more manglefication. If ya dont have one,, ya need one. Hobby Lobby has them & theyre better than the Harbor Freight ones, but shop both & decide

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by S-P on 12/06/13 at 20:51:06

Yeah I thought about the bakkerds trick too, but I have a pretty big magnifying glass.  I think I got an 80% good chance I got the last number right. It's either a zero or a 6 I think. It would be worth 30 bucks to get two keys made if one is wrong.  That's 150.00 less than a locksmith at this point.

Title: Re: Ignition switch swap?
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/06/13 at 21:02:40

If it Could be a 0, or it could be a 6,, couldnt it also be an 8? Still,, be ahead if its $45.00.. Maybe you can get a volume discount? OR, Take the iggy switch in & let the smith stick the blank in & make a key..
I had a locksmith rescue me when I was 22.. only about 36 years ago,,
I left Thibodeaux La. for Odessa texas. Took a cab to the storage building I had my car in,, & SHAZZAM! I left the keys on my DRESSER!!  Sopo,, long about 2 AM I called a locksmith. He came out, I held the light, ( I SOOO Like holding the light!) & he stuck a key in the door & wiggled it, took it out, studied, filed, back in, more wiggling, more filing, finally, the door opened, then he did the same with the iggy,,
He told me usually charged a lot more, but that since I was so interested in how he was doin that & was kinda fun to help, he just took a crisp $20.00 bill & went his way..
Anyway,, seems a locksmith otta be able to build a key,,& if you can provide the code that lay out most of the profile,, well,,

Interesting tread.
I did buy a tank for my flames paint and the tank come without a key. 30 years ago I did work as locksmith so I knew how to do.
It took a few second to open the lock. I took a feeler gauge and grind it so i fit the key slot, thats all :) My 8 years old boy could pick it also when he did see how :)
My bikes steering lock cylinder had the same key profile but I put it back empty, don't need to lock the tank.

Thats gonna go down hard for some folks here..After seeing what that locksmith did & watching some TV I had a shot at picking a few small, cheap locks, really, just turn the cylinder a little then rake a small wire across the pins. Theyll go to their spot & jam up, cylinder will twitch a hair, keep rakin till all the pins find their spot & Shazzam! Its open,,
I did that for my boss on some desks he bought, came w/o keys & drawers locked. Small flat blade & a paper clip.
Now, as for Making a key? Id Like to be able,, for sure,,
