Title: HEAD BOLTS!!
Post by SimeonC on 11/24/13 at 19:41:15

Does anyone know of a performance head bolt set for the ls650?? Ive found some bolts that are identical to the head bolts of the ls650 and they are grade8 steel (pretty mean stuff :o)... does anyone(who knows steel) think grade 8 steel is strong enough to last against the constant torque stroke of the motor? :-?

The bolts aren't the problem the steel inserts that the bolts thread into are more likely to fail than the bolts. I bought my bike with one pulled out and pulled another out when changing the timing chain.

Then stock head bolts with proper tourqe will last.

The cylinder bolts are not an issue, they hold up fine.

The head cover bolts are OK as well....they never fail

The problem that sometimes occurs is that people tighten the head cover bolts too tight.....they are small bolts and they only need a small about of torque.  If you overtighten them the threads pull out of the head.

The engine is aluminum and the bolts are threaded into aluminum, and like Dave said, it does not take much to pull the aluminum side threads out.
When I last had my cylinder off, I put steel thread inserts into the case where I had had problems with a couple of the longer bolts.  No more issues with that now.

I know that the aluminum threads in the engine are the weak link, I'm just a little jaded after watching ppl blow head gaskets and break rings from running head bolts that cant handle mods and overstretch... The steel thread inserts sound GREAT where can I get a set of those? :-?

SimeonC:

Relax.....No one on this site has ever experienced a stretched cylinder bolt, or any head gasket failure.  The 4 head studs and nuts, along with the studs under the intake/exhaust ports are what hold the cylinder to the head.......and they are specific items to this engine and you will not find any high performance options.

The numerious small bolts that hold the head cover down to the cylinder head are up to the job they do.....and they don't fail either as long as you torque them properly.  The bolts don't fail when you apply too tight of a toque...the aluminum threads pull out of the head cover/cylinder.  Get a good torque wrench.....and use it.
