I returned from a ride today, and after parking my bike and getting something to drink, notices a small, and I mean maybe one drop of oil, leak on my driveway. It was on the left front, under the shift linkage. I got down and looked under there, and there seemed to be quite a bit of old oil, plus some new.

I was wondering if this is a common place for leaks on the Savage, and if anyone has an idea of how big a job it would be to fix it. I know this is not much info, just wondering if anyone else has had to fix a leak in this spot, and what their experience was.

This is not a common place for a leak.
But it's not unusual to have a spot of oil where you said.
There is a drain hole underneath the starter in the black hole.
One possible place for oil to leak here is the starter.
There's a o-ring to seal the starter to the case.

Can you give me a little more info about this? My bike dribbles a drop or two from that area depending on how clean the concrete is underneath, but I cannot find a source. Do I take the starter off? Where does the o ring go? Can I find this on a diagram somewhere, ron ayers microfich, for example?

I'd start by cleaning the area real good.
Get some engine cleaner, take off the pulley cover and degrease that whole side.

next to remove the starter (got clymers? for shame!)
remove the 2 bolts on the end of it
remove the cable on top
lift the end, wiggle it about and pull abit
the o-ring is on the starter that was in the hole.
clean up whatever was underneath the starter.

when you take the pulley cover off, the drain hole should be visible.

Thanks, I will add that to my list of many other things to do. It is not a real consistent leak, more of an annoyance. But I do like things to be like they are supposed to be. I do have the clymers, by the way, but the bike is so close to the ground and I am so big it is tough to get under there. I told my wife today I wish I had a couple of days to just stay home and do nothing (meaning do the things I really want to do). Not likely to hapen soon, but it is a good thought.

Well, that was not the source of my leak. Under the starter was clean and free if oil. There was some oil, not alot on the side of the case, behind the pulley. Not too sure where to look now.

Check the tube coming out of the airbox.
