Hi Mike, the crank web serves as a rotating disk. Not the side but the circumference, there is about 2 thousandths of an inch of clearance between the crankshaft and the crankcase and that is enough to close it. Partly because a two-stroke has oil in the fuel and the crankcase and crankshaft are greasy and that provides extra sealing.
The resonant exhaust is indeed a brilliant invention; it was an engineer from the Czech motorcycle brand CZ who came up with it, and he sold his know-how to the Japanese—which caused quite a stir at the time.
But there is always room for further development. An interesting anecdote involves a Kreidler 50cc racer equipped with an exhaust that had been painstakingly optimized over years of development. During a test run, the rider went off-track and dented the middle of the exhaust, yet a few laps later, he set a new lap record.
I don't know if it's true, but I find those kinds of stories really juicy.
