Motorcycle friend was killed in accident
06/22/26 at 11:24:54

Last week a friend of mine was killed in a motorcycle accident.  He was 71 years old and an experienced rider.  He was in good health and his mind was sharp - all of his friends are in shock that this happened to Tim.  He was a careful rider and wasn't somebody that would have taken chances.

He was riding close to his house that is in a rural part of Ohio north of Cincinnati.  He had a STOP sign, and according to the news articles he was going to make a left turn and go south - and this required him to cross the two northbound lanes to get into the median area between the north/south lanes.  He evidently failed to yield to a vehicle traveling north and pulled out in front of them.  Barring some mechanical failure of the clutch - he evidently just didn't see the oncoming vehicle and pulled out in front of them.

Be careful out there - look twice, don't take chances, ride safe!

Here is a news article:

This is the Google Map link to the intersection:

Attached is an aerial photo of the intersection.

We have a couple of similar intersections out on  US-64 .  They are Dangerous !   The speed limit is 55 and folks run 70mph through there all the time.   It bothers me that local law enforcement seems to not care !  Sad

Just ride the speed limit , and smile !   Wink

Sorry for your loss, Dave. It's a sobering reminder of the risks out there.
Be safe everyone!

Dave I am so sorry to hear about your friend. it can happen to even the most attentive riders. my father in 2017 pulled out in front of a semi truck in his car, he is one of the best drivers I know. Luckily he did survive after spending 3 months unconscious in the icu and has since made a full recovery. A stark reminder to us all to pay attention at all times, on the bike, in our car, wherever.

Thanks Splash.

Our group of riders meets once a month for dinner...first Wednesday of the month at a sports bar for dinner.

The folks who know Tim and the intersection thought that maybe the trees cast shadows that obscured the little silver Prius that was colored similarly to the concrete pavement.....or perhaps the temple of the glasses he wears might of blocked his view.

There is no way to know what really happened - however he pulled out into the path of the car and got hit.

I'll be happy to see a law mandating that all vehicles sold in  America must have and use Daytime running lights .  Chevy has had automatic on running lights since at least 1999.

We have a lot of shady two lane roads where cars and trucks are running in and out of the shadows and blend in with the background/road surface.
The  gray/black vehicles just disappear !  Running lights would solve most of it .  TN has a "run lights durning rain law" but folks just don't think about being seen and won't turn their lights on till they need them to see at night !  Roll Eyes    Like their brains are not turned on !

This is the view he wold have had at the STOP bar, while looking up the road where the car came from.

Perhaps the road signs blocked a clear view of the car?

Possibly a lesson from this tragic incident. Dont stop at the stop line painted on your side of the intersection at a place like this . Put your front wheel all the way out to the edge of the travel lane where oncoming traffic is coming from your left.

I often ride through an intersection somewhat similar to this one, and in order to see cars coming from that direction I have to stop with my front wheel in front of the crosswalk which is painted on the road in front of the stop line. So Im essentially blocking the crosswalk with my bike. Otherwise it's not possible to see far enough down the road to know its clear.
