And now for something completely different

A book review/recommendation: The Personal memoirs of Ulysses Simpson Grant.
I was reading some article and they mentioned this book is one of the written in American history. I found that statement interesting because I have never heard of it before, despite living in St. Louis where Grant lived for a time and was stationed at Jefferson Barracks and despite being to Galena Illinois, several times where he worked in his father‘s hardware store.
It’s free on Apple Books. I’m about a third of the way through it so far and it’s been fascinating.

Before I thought I was a third look at the number of pages (as the page numbers are not always visible on my iPad) I’m actually a third of the way through now and I can say unequivocally, it is an excellent lead.
At times, it’s hard to follow his descriptions of the battles without a map made it that time with the names of all the creeks and small towns but nonetheless, it’s fascinating.
He does mention the difficulties of war at this time, such as heavy rain with creeks rising, the night which makes movement through wooded areas nearly impossible, and the difficulty of sleeping more than a few hours at a time.
I heard a military guy once before saying that if he went back in time and could have one technology, would he wish for better weapons, or something as simple as walkie-talkies, where he could have instant communication with all his commanders in the field and he said he would select communication. In reading this book and description of battles, I understand why the modern soldier said that. Miscommunication or the delay in communication changed the course of many battles.

Who knew Grant was a bleeding heart liberal?!!!
“On the 2d of August I was ordered from Washington to live upon the country, on the resources of citizens hostile to the government, so far as practicable. I was also directed to "handle rebels within our lines without gloves," to imprison them, or to expel them from their homes and from our lines. I do not recollect having arrested and confined a citizen (not a soldier) during the entire rebellion. I am aware that a great many were sent to northern prisons, particularly to Joliet, Illinois, by some of my subordinates with the statement that it was my order. I had all such released the moment I learned of their arrest; and finally sent a staff officer north to release every prisoner who was said to be confined by my order. There were many citizens at home who deserved punishment because they were soldiers when an opportunity was afforded to inflict an injury to the National cause. This class was not of the kind that were apt to get arrested, and I deemed it better that a few guilty men should escape than that a great many innocent ones should suffer.”

I finished the Grant book. Very hard to follow in detail unless you’re a student of military tactics or civil war history and you have detailed maps with you, but in between are great little tidbits of history worth reading about.
At times, there are some who argue slavery was not the cause why people volunteered to fight but as someone who lived during the build up to war and in his conversations with citizens throughout the war, Grant makes no bones about it, slavery was the only reason for the war. Anything else could have been negotiated away, but not that.
He also has some thoughts about America’s place in the future world which after 150 years, seem to be decent predictions.
Worth the read. Again, free on Apple Books.
