Electric issues
04/19/26 at 12:04:00

8 years ago I bought a 06' with 998 miles on it, ran fine. Now I am getting it out of storage. After cleaning the carb, it runs fine.
BUT, when you turn off the key it keeps running and you have to use the kill switch to stop the engine.
With the key off at idle I can see the running lights flicker. So it is turning everything off but the spark.
I had the tank off to install a GPS speedo, but only hooked and unhooked the plug going to yhe speedo. I have checked and wiggled all the connections I can find to no avail.
Anyone ever have this on thier bike?

That is weird - and not something I have any experience with.

The first thing I would look at is the electrical switch.  Disconnect the connector and see if for some reason it is not disconnecting the circuit when it is switched "OFF".

Looking at the running lights, they are steady with the switch on, but when I turn the switch off they flicker like they are running off just the dynamo.  And there is no drain on the battery with the switch off. Monday I will unconnect and reconnect all the plugs I can find, and cross my fingers.

Ignition switch is easy to disassemble, clean , lube & reassemble. Check battery cables too ! It’s a loose or corroded connector or switch. You’ll find it.

Could it be “dieseling”?

That is weird.  I hate electrical. I’m no help.

When you were playing with the gps speedo, could you have inadvertently rigged up some common hot wire to the ignition?  I’m really grasping as straws here.  Good luck!

Speedo just has a hot and ground, took both from orignal unit. Tried it with the speedo unplugged - same thing.
Maybe it has something to do with the cycle of the moon?
I might try sacrificeing a chicken.

Definitely check connections at the battery with a wrench and then check ground cable at right engine side cover. Sounds like a bad ground from your descriptions. Don’t forget about plugs under fuel tank too. You will find it !

Your gps has 2 power , 1 ignition power , 1 power straight from battery and is powered all the time for quick location. You’ll only need the ignition power.   Possible it’s causing your chaos.

I did not connect the quick start power, just the ignition power.
The only thing I can find the po did was bypass the kickstand switch with a jumper. I even tried undoing that to no avail.
I will ride it like it is for a while.
First bike I have rode in over 20 years (or more ) w/o a windshield, no engine noise, just wind. Wow, back to my youth, bugs tween my teeth.

I have looked through the wiring diagrams on the forum a bit - it is hard to follow when they are cut in half.....I will see if the Clymer is any easier to follow.

It appears the Decompression Controller is linked to the Voltage Regulator/Rectifier...I wonder if that could be involved?

There are reports of the Decompression Controller going bad and turning on for no reason....I can't remember if it triggers the starter when it malfunctions.

The decomp controller is 'on' all the time... don't know why.
the connector leaks water into the housing and can corrode the circuit board. This will cause the board to fail and turn on the starter launching your bike forward retracting the kickstand if it's in gear.

Kinda makes you wonder why it's mounted there and why it's pointed up. Maybe bending the mount so it's at least level would help.
