Looking at the photo...

I just want to give a compliment to those motorists who simply keep driving when the streets are flooded. It is thanks to you that this nation stays afloat.

Deb and I are on our way to spend a week in the area of Custer, South Dakota.  We left home on Thursday afternoon and headed northwest and spent the night in the RV at the I80 Truck Stop - the worlds largest truck stop with parking for 900 trucks!  They have spaces for campers to overnight and inside they have a Wendys, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Starbucks and a sit down restaurant. They have showers, a barber shop, dentist, laundry, theater.  The store area is so big that the semi truck they have parked inside is hardly noticeable!!!!!  They have a truck museum that is incredible, with many beautiful old trucks of all types....and it is free!

On Friday we drove north and west and got no i90 headed west through Minnesota and into South Dakota.  We started seeing a whole lot of motorcycles (mostly big Harleys) coming east....along with an awful lot of enclosed trailers that most likely had motorcycles inside.  After a bit we realized we were seeing the folks headed back home from the Sturgis Rally.  The weather has been on/off rain ever since we left - and the bikers were likewise riding in and out of showers on their way east.

We stopped in Mitchell, South Dakota to see the Corn Palace, and saw a couple of bikers there and chatted with them.  They were headed back to Indiana and we ask them if Sturgis had been wet.  I cannot type all of the words he used in this public forum - but he did say that it was a watery mess and he was ready to go home and dry out.  He had to be home to go to work on the second shift on Sunday evening - and I suspect most of the riders we saw were headed back to their jobs on Monday....or were just sick of being wet.  (There were 3 more days of events as the  Rally continues on until Sunday).

It is likely a good thing that we didn't plan a trip to Sturgis this year!!!!

Yeah, I think I’ve pretty much crossed Sturgis off my bucket list.  Not a fan of big crowds and the reports coming out are very mixed.

When you were on I90 going through LaCrosse, WI and entered MN, you were very close to my hometown Winona, MN.  The main town is actually an island in the Mississippi River.  The main waterway on one side and a series of streams and lakes on the other side.  Taking Highway 61 “northish” along the river and bluffs is beautiful.  There are lots of eagles and osprey fishing the river.

Sade travels!  Enjoy!

Paul:

A bit of a coincidence....I grew up on the outskirts of Winona, Ohio.

The weather on the last day of Sturgis has been wonderful.  We spent the early part of today riding around the wildlife viewing loop in Custer State Park.  There are a ton of motorcycle packs in the park, I hadn't realized that with the attendence at Sturgis the local rides were so numerous - or that you had the option of staying at so many nearby places and just driving to Sturgis to visit for a day or two.  Sturgis is 1.5 hours from our campground in the middle of Custer State Park.  It would be easy to stay here and enjoy the great scenic ride to Sturgis.....then do the "Way too many motorcycles, bikers and beer crowdy thing" for a day or two.

We talked to a few riders on their way back from Sturgis, and they said attendence was way down this year.  One fellow who had been going for years said it is getting too crowded and too expensive - his wife said a bowl of beef tips was $40.

I was a bit surprised at how many trikes I am seeing - I guess the age of "bikers" is catching up to them.  It appears that about 10% of the bikes I saw had 3 wheels.  I saw a few rigs that had sidecars and trailers.

We will likely go drive through Sturgis near the end of our visit here - we want to give them some time to clean up the litter and the smell of stale beer to dissipate before we visit.

Sunday afternoon update:

I just found the Sturgis Live Cams.

It is Sunday at 4PM - the streets are wet and most bikers are gone.  The traffic is cars and a few bikes driving through town - the sidewalks are mostly deserted.

Sturgis 2026 is over and done.

Sounds like a good plan, Dave!  Enjoy the surrounding area and then visit Sturgis after most of the crowd has left.

Pretty cool, Winona Ohio!

I watched a YouTube video from a fellow who has been going to Sturgis for years, and he had several comments about how it has changed.

He believes the prices are getting excessive and have affected attendance.  The opening day had attendance that was down only 3% - but by Thursday it was down 26%.  Weather was definitely a factor - but he also felt the $400-$500 a night hotel fees, $24 hamburgers and similar prices are just making it so folks can't afford to attend for more than a day or two.  Eating/drinking at the festival can easily top $100 a day if you buy from the downtown vendors.

Our stay in this area has revealed that there are plenty of places to stay and eat if you are willing to be 80 miles away from the event....the 1.5 hour rides to and from the event are wonderful roads to ride.

The number of Harleys on the road seems to be decreasing now that a couple of days has passed since the close of Sturgis.....it is amazing how loud some of these folks have made their bikes.  I just don't understand why they want their bikes to be so obnoxiously loud - they are not making friends with the general public (maybe that is their goal), and the folks who work in the park are glad they are gone for another 50 weeks!

I hope ya'll get to see everything there is thats worth seeing ... share some pictures for those of us how might never get to go see firsthand .

I have had the idea Sturgis was over rated as an event to go see ever since I went to Daytona Bike Week one time.   Roll Eyes

Yesterday we took a long drive and visited Lead, Deadwood and Sturgis.

Lead was an interesting town at the top of a steep hill and was a town built to support the huge gold mine industry.  We visited the mining museum and learned a lot about the mining of the town.

At the bottom of the hill was Deadwood and we wanted to see the old part of the town and see if they had any fun stuff about Wild Bill Hickock or Calamity Jane - unfortunately there was a huge vintage car event and the main street of town was blocked off and the entire town was overwhelmed with cars and people.....we could not even find a parking spot and just drove out of town.

We then drove to Sturgis.  The town was all cleaned up from the rally and it is obvious that it is set up to be a "party" town.  The stages and floors set up for the bands and entertainment events were empty, there were a few stores that were huge and had all sorts of clothing and supplies for bikers.  There were many T shirt shops selling all kind of STURGIS related clothing.  We ate lunch at the Loud American and had a great lunch.  There is a Harley Davidson museum - unfortunately we did not know about it when we were in town and didn't go visit.

The roads were very scenic and nice - speed limits in the park are generally 35mph and there was light traffic while we have been here - roads outside the park are 45-60mph.  I have not seen a single Police Officer or any speed enforcement anywhere in the week we have been here.....however I have not seen anyone exceeding the speed limit to any degree, and everyone is driving at a relaxed pace.

It is a very scenic place, great for access to hiking, seeing wildlife and taking road trips through the hills and valleys and exploring history.  The roads offer nice scenic rides at a relaxed pace.  We will be visiting the Devils Tower and the Badlands in the next few days.

While in Sturgis Lily got a new Bandana!

On our way to one of the hikes my wife wanted to do - we passed a field with a small herd of Longhorn cattle.

We stopped in order to get a good photo or two.

As I approached the fence to take the photo, one of the herd approached the fence.  This steer did not have the long, slender and curved horns the rest of the herd was wearing - instead it had straighter and incredibly thick horns.

The steer came right up to the fence and really enjoyed getting his head, neck and face scratched.  He would turn his head in order to get the scratching done in the spots that suited him most - I had to be watchful of those horns as they would cover a big arc when he turned his head and could easily cause some damage.  He was very gentle and enjoyed spending time at the fence - the others stayed in the field and ignored us.

I texted a few of these photos to my buddy and fellow forum member STEWMILLS and he could not resist the temptation to make the encounter a bit more active!

It is impressive how photos can be altered  (Maybe next time he can make me a bit younger and more handsome in the altered photo).
