Glad you made it home safe, Springman! A little wet and cold, but no cat scratch fever or trailer bruises. Isn’t it great doing 75-80 on I-10 and you’re still getting passed like your standing still! I did 85 on the speedo (like 80 gps) for a while. Still getting passed.

I took the backroads getting out there doing 65-70, and it was a much more enjoyable ride. Only added about 15-20 minutes.

Did you run into gas stations selling E15 fuel instead of more conventional E10? I had to buy up to 93 octane at one station (it was the only E10 option). Beware of the E15 sneaking in to some stations. Texas requires ethanol content to be disclosed, but some other states don’t. And there are 8 Midwest states that have even transitioned to E15 as their standard. They’ve basically pushed motorcycles to E0 (now considered “specialty fuel”). Sad that corn-free fuel is now considered specialty.

I found some info that the EPA doesn’t allow motorcycles to be designed to use E15. Totally contrary to all cars/trucks being built after 2001 being required to handle it. Supposedly there are a few BMWs that can handle it in European variants.

Last year when Deb and I went down to Big Bend in the RV pulling the Jeep behind, we were coming down from Oklahoma and the route would take us right through downtown Dallas on 35E. It was about 10:30PM and we figured it would be reasonable to travel through downtown late at night - no rush hour traffic and likely no backups or traffic jams....and we could merge the 45' long vehicle affair safely.

I was amazed how much traffic there was that late at night, and the "normal" speed of travel seemed to be 80mph through the concrete walled corridor. I know I saw one car doing at least 120mph as it whizzed by everyone! We made it through without incident - but I am sure all the locals saw our 60mph travel speed as a rolling road block!

35E through Dallas is always white knuckles and butt pucker! During the day and heavy traffic, people have no concept of the 2-second rule. It feels like everyone is drafting in a NASCAR race! When I was working I had several customers in Dallas and was there 2-3 times a month. My daughter was attending Texas Woman’s University in Denton. We’d meet up somewhere and that ride was always an adrenaline rush. Driving 65 felt like a death wish.

Riding I-10 at night it seemed like the traffic was much lighter. However, there were a bunch of 18 wheelers. I did have to ramp up the speed at times to get past the big trucks but I tried to keep it at 80 or below. As it is, it looks like the trip was a bit rough on my 29 year old bike as it seems I have developed an oil leak. If the weather id good this weekend I will try to take a look at it.

As far as gas goes, I filled up at the Stripes by the park before leaving Kerville. Then I only stopped twice, once at Bucee's in Luling and last stop at Bucee's in Katy. So I did not notice any E-15 gas.

I've been in Dallas traffic once on the S40 coming back from Lancer's, in the summer, triple digit temp... absolute torture. Hope to never do that again.

Well dang! Pesky oil leak. Hope it minor.

You got some of that good ethanol-free at Bucee's!! I hit the Bucee's in Katy and Waller fairly regularly. The Bucee's in Waller is a popular biker stop. There's at least 30-40 bikes there all the time.

Remember - Sunday is Mother's Day! You can't be wrenching on Mother's Day! You got tomorrow. LOL.

Totally agree, MM. However, in Texas, the speed limit is just a suggestion. Right lane is 65-70 (the blue hair lane), center lane is 70-85, left lane is for 85+. But when you ride the back roads, you better slow down in small town - speeding tickets are 50% of town revenue. Cops have to cover their salary plus $50k in tickets to keep their job.

You still have me thinking about the pokey trail Natchez Trace Parkway. From Houston, it’s about a day ride to Natchez, MS. It looks like they have a stretch of it closed down right now from French Camp to Mathiston (middle of no where in MS).

Some years ago there was a pic of a giant bear on a flatbed , dead of course. The bear was killed by a Harley on that pass or was it the bear killed the Harley , rider didn’t fare so well either. Winter pic , popular pass in summer months. Also I heard Pikes Peak may ban motorcycles from the road. That’s gonna screw up some bucket lists , mine included.
But to tell the truth when they paved the road to the clouds , that when I lost interest. It might be fun & safer but I think it $ucks. Back when I was racing it was a destination & a goal to get there & race , then came the pavement ! Angry
