Sue Tincher is a 55-year-old Minneapolis grandmother who stepped outside late at night after receiving neighborhood alerts that ICE agents were conducting raids on her block. Fearing her neighbors could be taken before sunrise, she stood on a public sidewalk, did not interfere, and simply asked officers to identify themselves. Within moments, agents tackled her into the snow, handcuffed her, and hauled her into an unmarked vehicle as if she were a violent suspect. Her husband was left in the dark for hours while federal officials refused to say where she had been taken.
Inside the Whipple Federal Building, Tincher says she was shackled, held for roughly five hours, and stripped of her personal belongings. Most disturbing, agents used cutters to remove her wedding ring, claiming vague safety procedures even though there was no medical issue and no emergency. Cutting off a wedding band is not routine. It is a deliberate act, one that sent a clear message about power, intimidation, and punishment for simply observing and asking questions.
ICE later claimed Tincher assaulted an agent, a familiar justification often used when conduct comes under scrutiny. Photos and witness accounts tell a different story. A small, unarmed woman surrounded by heavily armored officers was treated as a threat for standing on a sidewalk. If federal agents are willing to do this to a white American grandmother in Minnesota, in public and with cameras present, it raises an even darker question about what happens out of sight to immigrant communities who are targeted every day. This is not about public safety. It is about unchecked authority, and it should concern everyone who values civil liberties and the rule of law."
