There are many small towns that were built on the tops of hills and fortified for protection - after the Roman government fell these little towns had to protect themselves.  Many of the buildings were built in the 1100-1400's!

The streets are very narrow, they can be very steep, and they are made from small cobblestones laid in a pattern of intersecting curves.

Narrow streets accessible only to foot traffic.  (Some areas allow residents access for cars/scooters/bicycles).

There are many alleys for access to buildings that are not on the main streets.

This is an amazing trip - I never dreamed I would have been able to take a trip like this (Deb's sister was at a charity auction and won a week stay in a house at Lake Como).

I now believe everyone should figure out a way to travel to some place in the world that has this kind of history.  Until you see this in person you can never fully appreciate how incredible it is.  The buildings in Rome are absolutely huge - the ruins of homes up on the hill above the Forum were mansions of incredible size and covered acres of ground.

I had hoped you would go to that BMW Rally in TN , and win the trip for four bike rentals   Roll Eyes .   But we all can't do everything all the time.

Glad ya'll are getting to see Rome  and keep the pictures coming , now that the secret is out you can show more bikes and more other stuff too !  Smiley
