Squeaky belt
07/09/25 at 10:30:16

so today after my ride I noticed that my belt is starting to squeak, BUT only squeaks in certain areas otherwise it’s quiet.  The belt was adjusted apparently when it was certified for the road, and I can see the marking from a plant marker I’m assuming he used.  Never made noise before but today it did start to squeak

Also my front brakes are squealing when I back the bike up too lol 🤔 darn bike sounds like a little piggy lol

I’m definitely gonna have to get the bike rear end up and have a look and see what’s happening.  Maybe I’ll see about snapping a small clip and posting too.  Not sure if maybe the alignment is off or what

Won’t be able to get at this until likely Saturday or Sunday night

I run my belt a little bit looser than most - I prefer not having excess loads on the front and rear pulley bearings.  Use the finger twist method to adjust....you want to be able to twist the belt 90 degrees with your thumb and finger somewhat easily.  Also check the alignment and adjust so the belt runs in the middle of the rear pulley with clearance on both sides.  Don't spray anything on the belt - but rubbing candle wax or soap on the sides can help quiet the squeak.

The original front brake pads from Suzuki can squeak as they age.  Replace them with EBC organic brake pads and the noise will go away, and your brake will work a bit better.

IMO, belt noise on the LS is related to the ball bearing in the rear pulley hub.  That bearing is a single groove ball bearing and is usually in the toilet at about the 1000 mile mark.  Once that bearing is loose, no amount of fiddling with wheel alignment can stop the noise.  That's because it's not the wheel that's out-of-alignment, it's the pulley.  Installing a double row ball bearing fixes the problem permanently.  I've logged about 82,000 miles on my Bejing Bearing and the belt is still quiet as a church mouse.  The bearing is still smooth and shows no signs of wear.  Almost no pulley side-to-side play.

This old post provides the gory details.  It's easy & cheap (at least it was cheap 5 or 6 years ago).  Check your rear pulley for excessive play.

Well I’m hoping it’s just the belt that’s needing adjustment, as it does feel a tad tight when trying to the flip the belt 90degrees, at least more force then I would think that’s needed.

Seems to only squeak in some sections tho a little, gonna have a better look when I can get it up on my lift and spin the tire and listen and watch.  Not sure why it would be needed though as nothing has really changed and well I do drive a little aggressive though sometimes (mostly just hammering through some gears) lol.  My dad was saying when he was listening and watching the belt would move from one side to another when it would squeak but I could not see that when sitting on it and rolling it forward and backward.

Once I’m home I’ll see about taking a small clip and posting it and hopefully you guys can chime in on what I have happening, before I start pulling things apart and changing this or that lol

That can be a rabbit hole! However, you will get to know your bike and learn how to do many things on it. Good luck!

First step, grab the rear pulley and just see how it will deflect. If it wobbles easily, the belt won't ever track on center. But the SqWeekIng can be minimized by loosening it. When Dave said Twist 90* with thumb and forefinger, absotively a great idea. And Do that with a fourth grade TomBoy in mind. You aren't goin to jump the lumps outta grooves.between the belt and pulley. As much grief as I give WD40 there are good applications for their products. They have expanded their line.  They make a dry powder lube now. I haven't used it yet, but I bought some. The problem with WD40 isn't the product, it's the wrong application and expectations. When I see it sprayed into the door hinge on a car I cringe. That is where white lithium spray goes. WD flushes what lube is left out, but works for a few days. I "Pickled" all the guts of a BigAss automatic transmission with two or three cans of WD40 ,on the bosses orders, and parked them on top of the bathroom in a warehouse in West Texas, low humidititty place, coupla months later I hadda go up there for something and everything was Rusted! WD40 EvaPorates. Discovering that was costly for my boss. He thought I didn't use enough,, took a while to get him calmed down. That changed my mind about WD. It's not a lubricant, but it works as one for a while, as it flushes whatever lube is there Out. WD stands for Water Displacement. The 40th attempt Worked. Get water in your distributor cap, pop it off, hose it out with WD, hit the rotor and everything else and that MoFo Ottsta fire up..

There are several ways to stabilize the pulley. The most straightforward and dependable  is the double bearing. I red-necked mine and Minimized the wobble, but didn't end it. It became tolerable,,🤐

Ya everything is tight nothing moves around or isn’t straight all thought the belt is very tight that I have to really CRANK on the belt to get it at 90deg so I’m gonna loosen it up a bit and see that goes

Hopefully that’ll fix the issue

Yea the belt was super tight, so I’ve loosened it off.  Was no more noise on the jack so I figured I’d take it for a quick ride and snort in it and etc.  well when I got back it has a small squeak only when moving the back forward and it VERY little almost not noticeable unless I pointed it out

I also noticed my rear brakes aren’t the best now, I’m just wondering if maybe I need to re adjust them.  But the Indicator is the line on the dowl correct ?
