More tariff nonsense
07/02/25 at 15:04:03

47 is bragging on his "deal" with Vietnam. US customers will pay 20-40% tariffs on Vietnamese goods. Vietnamese customers  will pay zero tariffs on US goods. "The Art of the Deal" apparently  has crayon stick figures as "art". Roll Eyes

The US imposes a 20% tariff on most Vietnamese exports, down from the previously announced 46%

Goods transshipped through Vietnam (often to avoid Chinese products) are subject to a 40% tariff
In return, Vietnam does not apply import tariffs to American goods; American products have zero tariffs in Vietnam.

The aim is to prevent direct trade flows from China through Vietnam,

The deal is less advantageous for Vietnamese exporters than 0%, but also better than 46%. He is seeking a balance: penalizing transshipment and focusing on increasing American access to the Vietnamese market.

Trump is doing well.

47 is still trying to continue the unsustainable capitalism practiced only in the USA. He'll fail. Lost 33,000 jobs in June. MAGATs predicted a 100,000 a month increase. Unrestricted capitalism simply cannot compete in the world market. You're witnessing its death throes. Consumers pay tariffs.

our society will not survive without free trade
history tells us isolationism doesn't work

reminds me of when I saw a modified Dodge pick up in the Walmart parking lot with a bumper sticker that said "Buy American" what a clueless fool

The problem is, US capitalism has priced itself out of the world market. Say all you want about "socialism"; The are producing products with decent profits for the workers involved, and the limited capitalism allowed by socialism still makes the founders rich. They just don't have to pay the 300 or so times worker wages to the CEOs. ANY system that pays the top 1% that much simply cannot compete price-wise in the world market. US capitalism has to reorganize if it's going to survive. Don't worry so much about rich people. They won't LOSE a cent. They just won't get richer as fast... Smiley

Never understood what I can only assume is a variation of jealousy, the anger and hatred towards those who are financially successful. I don’t care if Jeff Bazos spent 5 million on his wedding. That’s 5 million going into the economy.

I really don't care how rich someone is, as long as it doesn't mean harming others. Predatory capitalism ALWAYS harms others.

Webster,

I wish Jeff his money and wish I had that much. I would do something else with it. But then again, I'm not Jeff.

But... maybe big corporations are beyond capitalism.

This is an interview with a well-known Greek economist (a socialist) who is giving an interview to a Dutch intellectual left-wing broadcasting organization that practices reasonably ethical journalism.(If such a thing still exists or ever existed)
(I'm just saying, so you're prepared).

It's a clear and easy to understand broadcast without too much emotion and extremism.

It's good to turn on the subtitles but it's not necessary because the message is in English.

All of us benefit from capitalism. Presumably, at one time or another, all of us owned a Suzuki motorcycle manufacturered by a capitalist company and bought from a capitalist dealer.

And socialist always care how rich somebody else is.  It’s their fundamental characteristic. At its heart, I think it’s based on the realization they are incapable of earning that much money or jealousy of trust fund kids.

I think this is too simple an explanation.
There are also disadvantages to capitalism, and there are people who experience these disadvantages. It is good to never be a victim of anything and we have a choice.
Not everyone wants to spend their life on making money.
But many have to work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet.

How do you find a path that suits you without being lived.
You have to at least be aware of what is going on in the world.
