Speedometer cable leak on engine case
06/06/25 at 16:09:01

So I’ve noticed the last few rides I’ve taken that right where the speedo cable goes into the case that it’s leaking a bit of oil.  I haven’t added any oil so it isn’t over full, first few rides the bike never leaked and now it has leaked a bit of oil the last couple rides.  I’ve made sure that it’s tight as well, but not sure if there is a seal or o ring there that’s bad or if maybe the crankcase valve or hose is plugged ? Is there a way to check and see if and find out what’s going on

Guess I’ll have to check and see if the vents are clogged or something before I decide to change the o ring on the Speedo shaft

99% chance it's the o-ring.  Seen this more than once.

Well I came across the o ring and it got a different part number then what is listed on previous posts in the above link

09280-10001 That’s the part number I’ve gotten from partzilla and other Canadian OEM parts

Bike never leaked my first few rides but then after such it saw some higher rpms and started to leak, so I thought it was loose so I tightened it up but still leaks a bit of oil not a lot but just a bit and enough to notice it coming up there

Also figured it may not be a bad idea to check the vents anyway just incase and for reassurance of such

So when I unscrew the Speedo cable from the engine case, do I need pliers or something to pull that little shaft out to replace the o ring ? Or does that shaft come out when Unscrewing the top ?

The cable with the little slot gear on the end of it will come out when you use pliers on the it.  It’s all one piece.  I’ll see if I can find a pic.

You don't need to remove the cable....and it is not an O-ring that keeps the oil from leaking - it is a seal.

When you remove the knurled nut on the cable, the seal often falls out and gets lost.  It is captured between the outer cable end and the top of the threaded sleeve on the engine.  The seal rides on that flat area just above the notched end of the cable.

The seal is not listed on the parts list for the Savage - so often the part number of the seal is from another Suzuki motorcycle.....and is the tachometer cable seal from a GT380/GT550/GT750.

Oh so then It basically is just like a garden hose rubber washer concept then ? Just goes inside the threaded cap on the case then

Oh lol 🤔 what size of o ring is that lol

Well I found a small rubber washer I had laying around from a faucet kit, I trimmed it to fit and well I had maybe just like a mist of oil for leak so it’ll do and keep it going until I order and received the proper seal for it
