Did I put the float bowl in wrong??
04/22/25 at 16:18:51

So, rough riding s40, took apart the carb, soaked it and parts in Berryman, got a new mixture screw, new air filter, put it all together, and now it just keeps trying to turn over but won't catch. Did I jig the float bowl backwards or something lol ?? Embarrassed Embarrassed

If that is the case and I have to take it out again, I may as well probably get one of the rebuild kits. Also a new float? Looked like that one in there 20 years. How important is a new float and needle in maintenance?

sounds like quasi no go   Wink

take a look at carb specs in the tech section index, it's a good ref for how parts go together.

it's not uncommon to swap the jets around when putting it back together.

also, after a rebuild, I always have a hard time getting it to start the 1st time, shoot some starter fluid in the throat.

Cool. Thanks. I'll check all this out and try to fire it again after work.

Ok, tried the gas. Went back into the carb from the bottom this time and checked the float - pics attached. Seems on right to me. My buddy was here and he said looks good (tho he's no Savage owner). Check the spring - pin goes up n' down. Reset the jets - gently turned it clockwise until it seats (didn't force it or overtighten)
Then backed it out about 1.5-2 turns counterclockwise

Made this adjustment, reassembled the carburetor completely, and try starting the engine again. This very well could be the main issue preventing your engine from starting.Nada. Sheeeit  Angry

Oddly - there was no fuel in the lower chamber when I removed it to look at the float - should there have been?

yes, with floats in it, it should be full

while it's out, put a bowl under the carb and turn the petcock to on or prime
gas should flow, figure out how much gas should flow at 50mph at 50mpg and you should be getting more than twice as much.

Ah! So that is suspect. I have a non-vacuum petcock in there right now. So, I have the gas line hooked to the carb, the top nipple (same side) capped (since no vacuum) the other two with lines going down connected to nothing. Maybe my tubing on the carb was wrong.

I will scour the pages here. My tubes must be wacky. Embarrassed

Ok, well I really didn't find what I was looking for, which was a visual diagram. But I did find these. In this first one there is a line running down from the bottom a) I do not have that. In the second photo there are numbers regarding the jets, b) I just snugged them down except for the mixture screw, which I snugged then went back 1.75 turns, and the third one shows two more vacuum lines with that strange note c) not sure if I even did that. First photo here...

If anyone is following this thread, I did end up getting a rebuild kit since it seems I am in the unfortunate position to remove it (at least) one more time.

More to follow... Grin

Be careful with the jets, it looks like you have a pre'88 carb and most rebuild kits will have different jets and I don't think they'll be wholly compatible with your year carb.

I would keep the original jets, just clean the hell out of them.

It's actually a 2005 S40. Unless of course the previous owner swapped out an older carb before I got it.  Huh

While I have everything off again, I will also put a uni UP-4229A on. I believe the 4" will fit.

The saga continues. Replaced this while I wait for my Unis. (Still didn't start though.)
