After checking my versy,(no movement last year) I noticed the black wire exiting the RHS crankcase appeared a bit worn.
Lots of photos in the manual (pages 123,151,156,157) but no explanation of what this wire does.  Help ?

I think you're talking about the neutral switch.
check out page 240

Clean & dry the wire  , then dribble or brush a couple of coats
of that liquid electric tape( hardware store near black electrical tape ) Couple areas on my 55 F100 harness where insulation just cracked and fell off was touched up a bit with that , works great , dries pretty quick too. Stuff comes in handy for sealing up all kinds of things. And yes it’s the neutral switch wire.
